Harburg (Schwab) station is a railway station in the municipality of Harburg (Schwaben), located in the Donau-Ries district in Bavaria, Germany. The station lies on the Ries Railway. The train services are operated by Go-Ahead Bayern.[2]

The city of Harburg has been working since the 2000s to bring the station closer to the city. At a site meeting on May 24, 2017, the plans were presented. The mayor of the city said that a new stop would replace the station and that it would be located directly at the elementary and middle school and should thus make the stop more attractive again. This had fallen through due to problems with the signal system. Therefore a new preliminary planning was made for the area behind the Märkerpark. The platform would then be built between the Mündlinger Straße/Wemdinger Straße level crossings and would then be accessible from both sides, massively improving accessibility and thus better connecting the entire city to rail traffic. Bernhard Christ, head of station management at DB Netz AG, explained that the platform would also be made barrier-free by means of ramps and that, in addition to a ticket machine, there would also be a shelter and passenger information systems. Around the new stop, the city would also take care of new parking spaces and a bicycle parking lot. Klaus-Dieter Josel, Deutsche Bahn's Group Representative for the Free State of Bavaria, explained that the barriers and signal systems might also be renewed in this context. There were already talks regarding an underpass in the area of Wemdinger Straße, which were also far advanced, but failed because of the financing. Preliminary planning had started at Deutsche Bahn for the new location and was presented to the City Council in a timely manner. The project should then have been completed by the end of 2018.[4]

Due to delays in the E-Netz program on the Ries Railway, Deutsche Bahn was ensuring that, among other things, the railway stop in Harburg on the line between Nördlingen and Donauwörth is modernized and the platform heights are adapted to the new trains that will run on the E-Netz from the end of 2022. The stop will be relocated by 600 meters, and a new outer platform and new overhead lines will be built. After completion of the new building, the existing old station would then be dismantled in early 2023. Opposite the platform, reptiles are to find a new home in so-called "reptile castles", with nature conservation at the forefront.[5]

Since the changeover of the timetable on December 11, 2022, and the accompanying takeover of the line by Go-Ahead Bayern, the new Harburg stop has now been completed and trains no longer pass through. The stop is now closer to the core city and has been transporting students from Ebermergen and Hoppingen to school in Harburg since December. According to Harburg Mayor Christoph Schmidt, this may be another option in the wake of the bus driver shortage. It is unique in the Donau-Ries district for a small town like Harburg to have three railway stops.[6]
