“Hard Work Equal Win” (愛拚才會贏) is a Taiwanese pop song with lyrics by Taiwanese composer Chen Bai-Tan (陳百潭) and original vocals by singer Yeh Chi-Tien (葉啟田), which has been covered and adapted by many singers. The album was released by Jima Records (吉馬唱片) in 1988, at a time when the people of Taiwan were struggling to create an economic miracle in Taiwan, and the lyrics were mostly about encouraging people who were down in the dumps or disillusioned to still have faith and work hard, making it one of the most popular Taiwanese pop songs in China and even the world to this day. It is one of the most popular Taiwanese pop songs in China and the world, and is often used as an election song in Taiwan's political campaigns.[1]
The title of the song "Hard Work Equal Win" has become a motto to encourage people to work hard, and the theme song of the 1988 Taiwan Television Company series "Grandma A-Pi Enrollment"(阿匹婆入學) is "Hard Work Equal Win”. On July 27, 1994, the artist Ni Minran (倪敏然) said that in the new program "Happy Taiwanese"(快樂台灣人) to be launched by Rebar Youlian (力霸友聯全線), he has slightly revised Mr. Seven (七先生)'s disposition to conform to the change in time and space: in the 1980s, Mr. Seven had a heavy emotion of “who knows what's in his heart”, and the person appeared to be melancholic; now that the political situation is different, Mr. Seven in the 1990s would be cheerful and positive, as the time was "Hard Work Equal Win."[2] On January 11, 2014, a few days before the death of Tsai Tong-jung (蔡同榮), a senior member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), family members played his favorite songs “Citizen Vote to Step into the United Nations” (公民投票踏入聯合國), “Brave Taiwanese” (勇敢的台灣人), “Hard Work Equal Win” (愛拚才會贏), “Return to my hometown” (回鄉的我), and ”Hometown at dusk“ (黃昏的故鄉), etc.[3] at the head of Tsai's bed in National Taiwan University Hospital. August 4, 2018, one day before the ceremony of water diversion by Kinmen County from the city of Quanzhou, the Fujian Provincial People's Government opened up the Taiwan-Hainan cross-strait media for a direct visit to the cross-strait water commissioning ceremony venue, the pumping station center control room, and other units, with “Hard Work Equal Win” music playing at the venue[4]
Adaptation
The original song “Hard Work Equal Win” has been filled with lyrics in Cantonese, Teochew, Hakka and Mandarin, and there are several other language versions. The Hong Kong Cantonese version, with lyrics by Leung Lap-yan (梁立人), is titled "Winning with Two Hands" (勝利雙手創), and is the theme song of the Asian television series "I Come from Chaozhou" (我來自潮州), featuring the vocals of Yip Chun-tong (葉振棠). In Malaysia, Cheung Siu Lam (張少林) wrote a Hakka version of the song, titled "Be willing to work hard and come out on top" (肯捱會出頭). In Chaozhou, there are two versions of the song, "Big Man" (大丈夫) with lyrics by Li Jinfeng (李今風) and "No Earnings, Do Have Food" (無賺做有食) with lyrics by Power Bicycle (動力腳車). The Vietnamese version of the song is called "Người đến từ Triều Châu", which means "People from Chaozhou", a direct translation of the Cantonese title. The Thai version of "ต้องสู้จึงจะชนะ" is a direct translation of the original Minnan language version. The Mandarin version includes "Never Conquer" (永遠不服輸) sung by Shi Xiaoqian (石小倩), "Meeting in the Dream" (相會在夢裡) sung by Lin Cuiping (林翠萍), "Rely on Yourself to Win" (靠自己才會贏) sung by Luo Shifeng, and "No Guilt in My Heart" (問心無愧) sung by Joyce Zhuo (卓依婷). The Shanghainese version of the song is a parody of Xia Xia (夏禕)'s cover of the song "Trying to be Auspicious" (努力吉星照)[5] on the MUCH TV political parody program "Funny Very Much" (搞笑Very Much). The Hong Kong dance duo Grasshopper had covered the original song in Taiwanese and rearranged by Wang Shuangjun (王雙駿) on their Mandarin album "Ba-ba-ba Doesn't Belong"(Ba-ba-ba 不屬於) (Rock Records) in July 1997.
