Haringey Solidarity Group

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Haringey Solidarity Group or HSG is a collective of community activists based in the London Borough of Haringey, London.

Aims

HSG aims to promote social justice, workers' control, public services, civil liberties, and a sustainable environment. It supports local community struggles and encourages self-organised actions against bosses, local councils, or multinational corporations. The group holds regular open meetings and produces informational materials such as leaflets and posters. HSG also supports the creation of similar groups in other London boroughs under the name "Radical London".

History

HSG was formed from the remnants of the Haringey Anti Poll Tax Union after the defeat of the poll tax. Initially, the group had several branches across the borough, but these were later consolidated into one group in 1994. In 2006, HSG established the Haringey Independent Cinema. The group has organised events like Haringey Independence Day to bring together various community groups.

Activities

HSG members are active in residents' associations, anti-fascism, and campaigns against billboards and debt. The group supports workers' struggles, including the 1995 JJ Foods Strike. HSG organises free community festivals, the monthly Haringey Independent Cinema, and distributes a free newsletter called Totally Indypendent. The group operates on a non-hierarchical basis, with major decisions made at open monthly meetings.
