Harley Johnstone, known online as Durianrider, is an Australian YouTuber, vegan activist, and cyclist. He is known for promoting a high-carbohydrate, low-fat raw vegan diet and sharing cycling tips through his online content.[1]
Career
Johnstone produces content focused on veganism, weight loss, and cycling under the pseudonym Durianrider. His YouTube channel, started in the early 2010s, features videos on raw vegan diets emphasizing fruit consumption, such as durian and bananas, as well as cycling training and race advice. As of 2016, the channel had nearly 200,000 subscribers. He has competed in mountain bike and road cycling events, including international races in Europe.[2]
Johnstone advocates for an 80/10/10 diet—80% carbohydrates, 10% protein, 10% fat—primarily from raw fruits and vegetables, which he credits for his athletic performance.
Personal life
Johnstone was in a relationship with fellow Australian vegan YouTuber Leanne Ratcliffe, known as Freelee the Banana Girl, from approximately 2008 to 2016. The couple frequently collaborated on content promoting extreme vegan diets, amassing nearly one million combined YouTube subscribers by 2016.[3] Their breakup became public amid mutual allegations of physical abuse, with Johnstone claiming Ratcliffe was violent and manipulative, while Ratcliffe accused Johnstone of initiating the abuse.[4][5]
Johnstone resides in Adelaide, South Australia.
In February 2017, Johnstone filmed and posted a video of himself confronting a motorist on a narrow road in the Adelaide Hills, accusing the driver of passing too closely and endangering cyclists. The encounter, which included profane language from Johnstone, drew mixed online reactions, with some supporting his advocacy for cyclist safety and others criticizing his aggressive approach.[1][6]
On 11 January 2020, Johnstone and his girlfriend were allegedly assaulted by two men outside the Adelaide Central Market. Johnstone sustained minor head injuries and was treated at Royal Adelaide Hospital. South Australia Police investigated the incident, seeking witnesses.[7][8]
