HarmonyOS NEXT, is a microkernel-based distributed operating system, which supports only native APP apps. Based on OpenHarmony, HarmonyOS NEXT has the HarmonyOS microkernel at its underlining core. It does not include Android libraries from EMUI in the user space and cannot run Android apk apps natively.[3]
History[edit]
On August 4, 2023 at Huawei Developers Conference 2023 (HDC), Huawei officially announced HarmonyOS NEXT, a standalone microkernel-based distributed operating system, which supports only native APP apps that removes current HarmonyOS multi-kernel distributed operating system Linux kernel with Linux and AOSP compatibilities on devices such as phones and tablets, LiteOS kernel for IoT. HarmonyOS NEXT Developer Preview 1 was released for cooperative enterprise IT on August 4, 2023[4] and Huawei plans to eventually release the next Developer Preview for all developers to develop apps for the standalone operating system by Q1 2024.[5]
