A view of Harput Castle

Harput Castle also referred to as Milk Castle, is an architectural structure constructed by the Urartians on a rectangular plan. It is located in the historical Harput neighborhood within the borders of the present Elazig province of Turkey. The castle consists of two parts: inner and outer. According to the rumor, milk was added to the mortar used in its construction instead of water, so it is also called "Milk Castle".[1]

History

The castle was built in the 8th century BC by the Urartian Kingdom. Since the 6th century BC it came under Persian rule. Between the 1st century BC and the 11th century AD, it continued under the Parthian, Roman, Sassanid, Byzantine and Abbasid rule, and under the Byzantine rule until the end of the 11th century. It was under the rule of Çubukoğulları in 1085, Artukoğulları in 1112, and Seljuks in 1234. The castle became the government center of Artuqid bey Belek Gazi and the Seljuk bey Alaeddin Keykubad, and in 1366, there was frequent change of dominance due to the struggles between Dulkadiroğulları and Akkoyunlu States. The castle was captured in 1465 by the ruler of the Akkoyunlu State Hasan Bahadır Han and taken under the administration of the Akkoyunlu State. Harput region and castle was taken under the rule of Yavuz Sultan Selim in 1515 by the Ottoman Empire.[1]

Architecture

The castle consists of two parts; the inner castle and the outer walls. The entrance of the rectangular castle is in the east of Harput. It was built in an area overlooking the Elazig Plain. Various dungeons, living and treatment areas were found in the excavations carried out recently.[1]
