Harriett D. Foy is an American actress and singer. She is best known for her portrayal of Patrice Woodbine on the Starz series, P-Valley.
Early life[edit]
Foy was born in New Bern, North Carolina and raised in Brooklyn, New York and Forestville, Maryland. She attended Howard University, where she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting. She was a founding member of Howard University’s Divine, Intelligent, Versatile Artists Inc., which is a society for women in the arts.[1] After graduation, she moved to New York to begin her professional acting career.
Career[edit]
Foy made her Broadway debut in 1991 as an understudy in the musical Once on this Island.[2] She went on to perform in several shows off-Broadway and regionally, including playing the title role of Dinah Washington in Dinah Was off-Broadway at the WPA Theatre.[3] She returned to Broadway in 2003, playing the wisecracking Rosie in the Broadway musical Mamma Mia!.[4] Her other Broadway credits include Amazing Grace and Amélie, A New Musical.[5] Her 2018 performance in The House That Will Not Stand at New York Theatre Workshop off-Broadway earned her an AUDELCO Award[6] and nominations for the Drama Desk Award, Outer Critics Circle Award and Drama League Award.[7] In sum, throughout her career, Foy has performed for audiences across the world, from New York to Dubai.[8]
She made her concert debut at Merkin Hall in 2012 in The African American Spiritual, produced by B. Arts Presenter.[9]
After a series of small roles in television shows, Foy nabbed her largest small screen role to date, as Patrice Woodbine in P-Valley on Starz. The character has been described in press materials as “a gospel singing pimpstress and the muva of our shero, Mercedes. She’s a larger than life, wanna-be preacher who can squeeze an offering from a stone and have an entire congregation speaking in tongues.”[10] In its review of the series, The Hollywood Reporter called her performance “dynamite."[11]
In 2022, she returned to the stage for the limited engagement of the musical Ella, about the life of Ella Fitzgerald and starring Freda Payne as the title character.[12]
Personal life[edit]
Foy is single and lives in Manhattan when not filming.
Foy is President of The Lighthouse Opera Company, which purportedly "exists to help shine a light on classically trained singers of all backgrounds by performing operas in their original language for new and diverse audiences in the Bronx, New York and beyond."[13]
