Haruki Watanabe (Japanese: 渡邉悠樹 Hepburn: Watanabe Haruki, born August, 1986) is a Japanese theoretical physicist. His research focuses on condensed matter physics and quantum many-body systems. He is an associate professor in the Department of Applied Physics, the University of Tokyo.
Life
Haruki Watanabe was born in Nagano Prefecture in 1986. He graduated from Tokyo Metropolitan Nishi High School in 2005 and received his bachelor's degree from the Department of Physics, Faculty of Science, the University of Tokyo (UTokyo) in 2010. He earned his Ph.D. in physics from the University of California, Berkeley in 2015, under the supervision of Ashvin Vishwanath.[citation needed]
After completing his doctorate, he became a Pappalardo Fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2015. In 2016, he was appointed Lecturer in UTokyo's Department of Applied Physics, and was promoted to associate professor in 2019.[citation needed]
Research
Watanabe has made a wide range of contributions to the theory of condensed matter physics and quantum many-body systems. In particular, he received the 31st Nishinomiya-Yukawa Memorial Prize for his research on the Nambu–Goldstone theorem in non-relativistic settings.[1] He was awarded the 12th Condensed Matter Science Prize for his work on the topology of band structures using space groups.[2] He also received the New Horizons in Physics Prize for his proof of the non-existence of time crystals in the ground state and thermal equilibrium of quantum systems.[3]
