Harun Maalim Hassan born in Dandu location, Mandera County in Kenya. He attended Mandera Boys Town Primary School, and Mandera Secondary School. He holds a Bachelors Degree in Environmental Studies from the Kenyatta University.[1]
Career[edit]
Harun worked as an environmental officer in the National Environment Management Authority, then as a District Officer in Mandera."[2] It was during this occupation that, at the age of 28, he was involved in a road crash. He is the founder of the Northern Nomadic Disabled Persons Organization (NONDO), a disability non-governmental organization focused on persons with disabilities living in the arid northern parts of Kenya. He is also the Executive Director of the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, having been appointed in December 2020. This is a state agency whose key mandate is to advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities in Kenya. [3]
Disability[edit]
In March 23,2007, he was involved in a road accident. He was admitted at Nairobi Hospital high dependency unit for four months, where the medics informed him that the injuries sustained meant he would never walk again. For seven months, he underwent rehabilitation at the National Spinal Injury Referral Hospital. He explained that this was a dark time in his life, at some point even wishing for death. He said, "I asked my family to take me back to Mandera to try herbal medicine. To them, it was a good idea but for me, I felt it was the easy route to death because I opined that if I fell ill while in Mandera, I would die since the hospitals are far[4]"
Harun is also an author, having published Behind the Wheels: Transforming the Narrative [5], a story of his life as a person with disability and a disability activist.
