Harvard National Model United Nations (HNMUN) is one of the oldest and largest Model UN conferences of its kind.[1] It is run by Harvard's International Relations Council.[2] HNMUN's delegates come from all over the world to debate current and historical issues, propose solutions to global issues, and work with other delegates on policy proposals.[2]
Overview of HNMUN
HNMUN is a 4-day Model United Nations simulation for college students. Every year, delegates from around the world participate in HNMUN and compete against other delegates. Best Delegate has consistently ranked HNMUN in the top tier of North American conferences.[3] [4] [5] [6]
Staff Makeup
HNMUN is staffed entirely by undergraduate Harvard students. There are three components to HNMUN's staff. The upper component consists of Secretariat members. This includes the Secretary-General, the Director-General, the three substantive Under-Secretary-Generals, and the four executive Under-Secretary-Generals. Substantive organs serve as the organizing bodies of committees and each organ has several committees that represent real United Nations (UN) committees – such as the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the Human Rights Council (HRC). Executive organs oversee the administration, finance, business, and operations of the conference.[7] The middle component of HNMUN staff consists of Directors. These are the students who direct committees or who serve as directors supporting executive organs. Lastly, there are the junior staffers which consist of assistant directors who support the directors.
Conference Structure
Each conference begins and ends with an opening ceremony and a closing ceremony, respectively. The opening ceremonies includes opening remarks from Secretariat members and the closing ceremony consists of closing remarks as well as announcements about individual and delegation awards. For the rest of the conference, delegates spend their time in their assigned committee rooms.
Committee Structure
There are three main substantive organs: the General Assembly, The Economic and Social Council and Regional Bodies, and the Specialized Agencies. Each of these organs has a different size, goal, and format. Committees inside these organs focus on topics that are decided by Directors. Delegates are each assigned to a committee and they spend their time at conference debating 1-2 topics in that committee.
