The "Harvard Doctorate Incident" , a literal translation of its Chinese original, 哈佛博士事件, is both awkward and inaccurate. Being awkward, it associates the crown jewel of higher education in the USA with criminal offenses in a foreign country. Being inaccurate,it is more than an incident but rather a series of escalating developments: defamatory campaigns, global censorship, cyberattacks, attempted assassinations, etc.
In 2002, Dr. Lin Chen, a Harvard-educated scholar, returned to his homeland to be the nation's highest-paid college president. His return and appointment made national headlines. Its coverage involved the outlets of most state media and local media in Shandong province, where the college is located, and lasted for about a month from late June to early August 2002.
The Chinese Youth Daily and its parent organization, the China Communist Youth League, both carry the word "youth", which tends to make people think of bright, young, open, and innocent. The reality, however, is rather disappointing. A brief online search revealed that a number of former employees of the China Youth Daily who recently died all worked for the Daily before their retirement. Therefore, the China Youth Daily is a propaganda machine that is being operated by the elderly in the name of youth.
China Youth Daily published reports, editorials, and opinions to launch a series of accusations against Dr. Chen. The media onslaught of an intellectual with such intensity was unseen after the Cultural Revolution ended 30 years earlier.
The China Youth Daily's accusations are all fabricated and falsified, according to Dr. Chen, but he was not allowed to openly reply to and contest the allegations. Independent media were not allowed to follow up to check on the Daily's allegations either.
Consequently, his reputation was ruined, his job lost, and his family shattered. Dr. Chen, one of the nation's top talents, was character-assassinated and socially death.
