From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Hawaii Reporter is an independent online news website that covers key business, government, political and educational stories in the US state of Hawaii.

History[edit]

Hawaii Reporter was founded by journalist Malia Zimmerman and has been the recipient of many awards for excellence in journalism.[1]

Hawaii Reporter was a networked news organization funded by the Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity [2] that produces an online daily newspaper based in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Franklin Center funds reporters in over 40 states.

[3] Despite their non-partisan description, many of the websites funded by the Franklin Center have received criticism for their conservative bias.[4][5] It is described by co-founder, Jay McWilliams as having a focus on government, politics, business and education.[6]Hawaii Reporter is a networked news organization of the Franklin Center for Government and Public Integrity. It is known for publishing articles directly from the discredited Talon News.

In January of 2015, Malia Zimmerman was hired by FOX News in Los Angeles.[7] She handed the website over to the writers to continue as a free and independent non-partisan media website.

Special Reports and Deep News Coverage Of Hawaii[edit]

Hawaii Reporter’s special reports on topics such as a slave factory in American Samoa, elderly abuse, the 2004 mayor’s election, the Ka Loko Dam breach [8], the Hawaii Superferry[9], the Honolulu rail, climate change, Women of World War II[10], Growing Up in Hawaii, Slice of Life Hawaii, legislation at the Hawaii State Capitol, sex trafficking in Hawaii [11]and corruption and waste in local government, have gained local and national attention.

Hawaii Reporter was also the local inspiration for the Hawaii Journalism Shield law passed in 2009 – a law considered one of the best in the country by national journalism advocacy organizations.[12] In 2011, it failed to win re-approval. In 2023, House Bill 1502 is aiming to restore it. [13]
