Hawraz Gulpi (هەوراز گوڵپی; born 22 October 1985), born Hawraz Amin Qadir, is a Kurdish journalist, news anchor, and television presenter known for his work in political and social broadcasting in Iraqi Kurdistan. He has worked for major Kurdish media networks including Rudaw Media Network and Ava Media, and in November 2025 his programme Fayli Xelk won the Shorty Impact Award in the News & Media category.

Early life and education

Hawraz Gulpi was born on 22 October 1985 in Halabja, Kurdistan Region of Iraq.[1] He completed his primary and secondary schooling in the town of Khurmal. Due to financial hardship in his early years, he temporarily left formal schooling and studied at mosque schools as a student cleric (faqe). He later served as a preacher and imam (mela) in a village in the Penjwen district, an experience he has credited with sharpening his oratory and improving his command of both Arabic and Kurdish.[2]

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Arabic Language from the College of Arts at the University of Baghdad.[3] He speaks Kurdish (in both the Sorani and Hawrami dialects) and Arabic.

Personal life

Hawraz Gulpi married in 2011 a woman from the Khoshnaaw district, whom he met while both were working at Radio Shafaq in Baghdad.[4] The couple have two children; their elder son is named Yusuf.

The surname Gulpi derives from the village of Gulp in the Hawraman region.[5]

Career

Early career (2006–2011)

Hawraz Gulpi entered journalism formally in 2006. His early roles included writing for the Kurdish magazine Garmyan in Baghdad and working as a news presenter at Radio Shafaq in Baghdad for approximately one year, which marked his debut in broadcast journalism.[6]

Radio Nawa and Rudaw (2011–2023)

From 2011, he moved to Sulaymaniyah where he worked as a news presenter and anchor at Radio Nawa for over a year. He subsequently joined the Rudaw Media Network in Erbil, where he worked for approximately eight years (c. 2015–2023) as one of the network's lead news anchors, presenting the flagship political bulletins at 14:00 and 16:00.[7][8] During his tenure at Rudaw he covered several major regional and international events, including the political crisis of the Kurdistan Parliament, the Russo-Ukrainian War, and the 2022 Iranian protests.

Ava Media (2024–present)

Following the launch of Ava Media in September 2024, Hawraz Gulpi joined the network as presenter of the evening 19:00 news bulletin and host of the citizen-advocacy programme Fayli Xelk.[9][10] He left the network in May 2026.

Fayli Xelk

Fayli Xelk (فایلی خەڵک, lit. 'People's File') was a citizen-advocacy segment broadcast within the evening news programme at Ava Media. Presented by Hawraz Gulpi, the segment brought citizens' grievances — including delayed salaries, public services, and healthcare issues — directly to relevant government authorities. According to official figures cited by the programme, it contributed to the resolution of more than 240 cases and provided direct assistance to approximately 130,000 citizens.[11][12]

Awards and recognition

In February 2020, Gulpi was awarded the Shield of Honor by the College of Islamic Sciences at Salahaddin University in recognition of his contributions to broadcast journalism and his role hosting the Yek Hewal programme on the Rudaw digital portal.[7]

In November 2025, his advocacy programme Fayli Xelk received the Shorty Impact Award in the News & Media category, alongside the Audience Honor distinction at an industry ceremony held in Los Angeles, California.[12][13]
