Early life and education[edit]

Hayley Melissa McLaughlin was born in Rutherglen, Glasgow, Scotland on 5 January 1994,[citation needed] the daughter of Jim and Ann McLaughlin.[1] She lived in the United States, in Salt Lake City, Utah, for a year when she was a 14-year-old,[2] but otherwise grew up in Linlithgow, Scotland.[citation needed] In interview, McLaughlin describes having begun study of psychology at Glasgow University, leaving in her first term to enroll in an "acting foundation course to see if it was something I wanted to commit to".[2] She then describes having set sights on drama training at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama or at a drama school in London, and began auditioning, but was admitted to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (AADA) after auditioning in Edinburgh in response to a local advertisement.[2] She went on to attend the AADA (in Hollywood, California) on scholarship, and received her degree from there.[1][when?] She returned to the UK for a time, after graduation, and in that time, pursued some further acting study at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art.[3][verification needed]

Career[edit]

In 2009, McLaughlin's acting career began with a role in River City, a British TV series.[3][better source needed]

In 2015, McLaughlin guest starred as Ariel in that season's penultimate episode of The Librarians on TNT,[2] basic cable's second-most viewed new series,[4] which developed series regulars and, via a "cliffhanger", set up the season finale.[5] Acting alongside stars Rebecca Romijn, John Kim, John Larroquette, Noah Wyle, and others,[4][1] McLaughlin continued the season's Shakespearean theme (her Ariel being an allusion to his Tempest character),[6] with her "perfect"[7] and "delightful" performance eclipsing the recurring Prospero to io9 critic Katharine Trendacosta.[8][9] She auditioned using her Scottish accent, and ultimately performed her character in it,[2] which drew some commentary on review.[5]

In 2019, in film, McLaughlin co-starred in cinematographer-director Svetlana Cvetko's Deadly Switch alongside Dylan Walsh and Danika Yarosh, the latter who played the movie's protagonist, Ana.[10] Also reaching the small screen in 2019 was McLaughlin's voice work as the female protagonist in the premier episode of the Netflix anthology series created by Tim Miller and David Fincher,[11] Love, Death and Robots, a stand-alone animated piece, "Sonnie's Edge",[12][13][verification needed] for which she and the series received broad international news coverage.[14][3][15][16] She will appear in a recurring guest star role in season 2 of Robert Zemeckis' period UFO drama Project Blue Book, an A&E and History Channel production, alongside Aidan Gillen, Michael Malarkey, Laura Mennell, Ksenia Solo, and others, that will premier in January 2020.[17][18]
