Summary[edit]
The Sands of Borrowed Time is a work of fiction. It centers around the main character Kyla, and her friends in a post-apocalyptic world where the ozone layer and society has been destroyed by a supernova blast. Civilization has been reduced to small groups of people that exist in a dystopian society. Resources are scarce, and people struggle to survive. The story shows the progression of their friendships in a harsh and barren landscape and the fact that a hidden hand may be guiding their fates.
Setting[edit]
A supernova explosion has weakened the ozone layer, leaving Earth dry and desolate, hot by day and freezing at night. The hot days cause 'dry storms' to brew, resulting in harsh, tumultuous sandstorms that deplete the air of oxygen, making it difficult to breathe and see. Traveling on foot is difficult, and many, if they can, use buggies to get around, often traveling at night. Resources are running low, breeding bandits that roam the highways searching for what little they can from unsuspecting travelers. Rainfall is rare; however, rumors flourish that there is respite in the north with water freely available from melting snows, encouraging many to wander north in the hope of a better life.
Themes[edit]
The main themes of the book that underlie the story lines are freedom, friendship, truth, and what it means to live in fear - the true nature of reality hidden by a thin veil woven by a hidden hand.
Plot[edit]
The book describes several interweaving narratives based around the young protagonist Kyla, a young orphan in the hands of Cain and Karla, an odd couple who lead a small dystopian society. The dystopian characters live in a post-apocalyptic Earth where the ozone layer and much of human civilization has been destroyed by a supernova. Day -to-ay living is tough in the resulting barren landscape ,where friendships are hard to forge and easily lost. Kyla is determined to forge her own friendships and destiny without her guardians as she travels in search of a better life. However, the narrative challenges the concept of her freedom ,twhichis often masked by ones own illusions ,and the true nature of reality. As Kyla and the other characters mature through their adventures ,some slowly become aware that all is not what it seems and that a cleverly orchestrated deception may be deluding the Earth's dwindling inhabitants.
