Hełm wz. 67 is a Polish steel helmet used in the Armed Forces of the People's Republic of Poland and in the Armed Forces of the Republic of Poland until today.

History[edit]

Work on a new steel helmet to replace the wz. 50, started at the Military Institute of Armament Technology in 1964. The construction team was led by Colonel MSc Eng. Romuald Zimny. The helmet was officially adopted on April 21, 1967.[1]. The helmets were produced, among others, in Huta Silesia until the end of the 1980s.

In the 2000s, the wz. 67 was gradually phased out, making them widely available thanks to surplus military agencies[2].

Construction[edit]

Its shape refers to the pre-war wz. 31. The body is pressed from a special steel sheet with a thickness of 1.4 mm. It has a slightly marked visor and a tiny brim. The mass of the body is about 1.5 kg.

Liner system[edit]

In helmets wz. 67 there are three types of interior equipment. The first type is the lining used in wz. 50. The second (the most common) is mounted on a load-bearing element in the form of a metal rim. A leather belt is attached to it, cut into eight elongated leaves. Each of them was sewn together at the end, which creates a tunnel. A shoelace is threaded through the tunnels, thus creating a kind of cap. The fascia is attached to the body with one screw located on the top of the helmet. Such a procedure significantly facilitates the replacement of a damaged fascia, as well as its quick disassembly, which allows you to wear the helmet directly on a fur hat in winter. The chinstrap, made of leather, is attached directly to the skull. It is fastened with a metal buckle.

The fragments are made in two sizes: small (adapted to the assembly of fascias in sizes: 54-57 cm) and large (adapted to the assembly of fascias in sizes: 58-60 cm).

The third type of internal equipment was introduced in 1977. The new fascia consists of a metal frame, a complicated system of straps and a leather "hammock". The hammock can be adjusted to fit any head size. The new design allows the helmet to be held firmly on the back of the head, so that it does not slip on the face, for example when crawling. Helmets with such equipment are marked as wz. 67/75.

Painting[edit]

Initially, it was planned to paint the helmets with "Salamandra" anti-reflective varnish, similarly to the wz. 31, however, this idea was abandoned. Serial helmets were painted with a smooth semi-matte varnish in two colors: green (for the land forces) and gray-blue (for the air forces, the National Air Defense Forces and the Navy)[3]. The emblem of the Land Forces or Air Force eagle was painted on the helmets (or applied in the form of decals). On the helmets intended for WSW, an appropriate mark was applied[4]. Helmets intended for the Citizens' Militia had large letters "M" and "O" painted on the front and a large state eagle between them[5]

Additional equipment[edit]

For the purpose of masking helmets wz. 67 and wz. 67/75 is equipped with a camouflage net and a special face shield. In helmets for the land forces, the mesh and cover were khaki, and in gray-blue helmets - in the same color. In winter, white covers were used. Currently, in order to mask the helmets, material covers in the pantera camouflage are also used.
