Heart Niagara (est. 1977), headquartered out of Niagara Falls, Ontario, is a registered Canadian not-for-profit corporation and the largest cardiovascular-focused organization of its kind in Ontario’s Niagara Region.[1]. Founded in 1977 by Dr. Stafford Dobbin[2], the organization focuses on heart-health education and training, offering programs and services through its own facility, as well as through partnerships with schools and local governments.

Objectives[edit]

Heart Niagara’s objectives and mission are:

• promoting cardiovascular health in the community

• advocate for the cardiovascular and overall health of the community

• ensure the community has continued access to heart-health educational tools and training

Activities[edit]

As a cardiovascular-focused organization, Heart Niagara is involved in a variety of activities such as:

  • promoting heart-health awareness, education, and training through programs and services offered in-house
  • partnering with local agencies and government to promote road safety, specifically as it relates to students
  • partnering with local agencies and government to promote healthy living in local schools
  • promoting healthy living through a highly-specialized fitness program

Programs and Services[edit]

Cardiovascular Diagnostic Services

Heart Niagara offers varied cardiovascular services such as holter monitor maintenance, echo sonography, and smoke cessation programs[3].

Healthy Heart Schools Program (HHSP)

Offered in partnership with the District School Board of Niagara, the Niagara Catholic District School Board, Niagara Region Public Health, and the Ontario Ministry of Health, the HHS Program provides students across the Niagara Region with AED/CPR and First Aid training, as well as educational tools[4].

HeartCORE

A specialized, gym-alternative fitness program designed to increase cardiovascular health and fitness[5].

Reachable Roads Campaign

Launched in partnership with Niagara Region Public Health, Niagara Region Transit, Niagara Student Transportation Services, and the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, the Reachable Roads Campaign is built to promote safe driving, and specifically school bus safety[6]
