Heather Ihn Martin
Heather Ihn Martin (July 29, 1983) is a fine artist based in Michigan. She is a trained illustrator and painter. She attended the Ringling School of Art and Design (now the Ringling College of Art and Design) in 2001[1] and received her BFA in Illustration. She spent a decade working in video game development and design before deciding to pursue painting with her full attention.[2] She primarily works in watercolor, specifically gouache, on wood panel, though in recent months she has started exploring and honing her skill with oil paints. She almost exclusively works from real life subjects, cementing herself within the en plein air school of painting and drawing the majority of her inspiration from the natural world.
Biography
Heather Ihn Martin was born in South Korea on July 29, 1983. She was adopted by her parents Brian Houghton and Cindy (McNeilly) Trucks and was raised in rural Michigan. As a child, her two aspirations were to either be a Veterinarian or an artist.[3] Her passion for art was made clear from a very young age, and she began painting with acrylics at the age of 16.[3] After finishing her high school education, she attended the Ringling School of Art and Design to study for a degree in Illustration. She had aspirations of becoming an animator for Disney but instead went into video game design for a number of years before leaving the field of game design in 2018 and turning fully towards a career in painting.
Heather currently lives in the foothills of Northern California with her husband, Jon Martin, and a variety of pets including two cats, two dogs, and a multitude of birds. She often uses her pets (and sometimes her husband) as models for her paintings. She tries to spend 1-3 hours each day painting to keep her skills sharp. Her favorite things to paint are the things she loves, such as the animals and people in her life. Her favorite fruit is a tomato, and she enjoys listening to Radiohead, Fiona Apple, and Saves the Day as well as the Soundtrack for Disney’s 2000 film Fantasia.
When asked where she draws her inspiration from, Heather was quoted saying: “Honestly? Life! While I definitely am inspired by other people and artists, I am absolutely most inspired from life and nature. Once you open your eyes to the beauty around you, you see it everywhere and start to appreciate it. The way light falls on an object, the way colors bounce and reflect off each other, the stories you can tell, and the endless compositions you can play with. These are all things that are right in front of you!”[3]
Artistic style
Heather Ihn Martin paints primarily from real life models. She often paints in the en plein air style, which translates to “outside". The majority of her body of work is painted with gouache, but she has recently started painting more with oils. Popular subjects of hers include chickens, vases of flowers, self-portraits, and landscapes.
Awards
She has received a multitude of first place awards in the en plein air painting community for her still lifes and landscapes alike.[1] She currently has approximately one-thousand Instagram followers with a total of two thousand five hundred and twenty-two posts. She participated in the "Paint Grand Traverse" en plein air event in 2019.
