Heather Judkins is an associate professor in the Integrative Biology Department at University of South Florida St. Petersburg (USFSP), where she teaches Marine Biology.[1] In addition to her work as an educator, she is known for being a cephalopod expert. Her research focuses on cephalopod biogeography, ecology, and evolution in the deep sea.[2] At USFSP, Dr. Judkins runs the Judkins Invertebrate Lab where twelve female graduate students study cephalopods and marine life under her supervision.[3]

Early life and education

Judkins attended the University of Rhode Island, where she received her bachelor's in Marine Affairs in 1993. Four years after receiving her bachelor's, in 1997, she earned her Master of Science in Education at Nova Southeastern University. Finally, in 2009, Dr. Judkins received her PhD in Biological Oceanography at University of South Florida, where she is currently a faculty member in the St. Petersburg campus.[4]

Career and research

Educator

In 1994, upon receiving her bachelor's degree, Judkins started her career as a marine science educator at Seminole High School in Florida; she continued to teach as a high school instructor until 2011. In addition, once Judkins received her Master's in 1997, she also started to teach at the college and university level. She has been an educator at St. Petersburg College and University of South Florida, St. Petersburg.[5]

Since 2011, Judkins has focused on deep sea research.[7] Her research is achieved by collecting samples, either by using nets or by videography methods. Through the Deep Pelagic Nekton Dynamics of the Gulf of Mexico (DEEPEND) consortium, Judkins’ research in the Gulf of Mexico is providing new information and data to the scientific world as most research in the region is focused on shallow water species of cephalopods, rather than midwater species.[8] She specifically focuses on how different environmental conditions and factors play a role in the species found in a specific habitat.[7] She even evaluates the effects of environmental disasters, like the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, on biodiversity of cephalopods.[9]

Awards and grants

Awards

Dr. Judkins was a National Board Certified Teacher from 2003 to 2013, a certification for highly accomplished teachers. She was also awarded the Florida Marine Science Educators Association Educator of the Year in 2012.[5] In addition to being recognized for her work as an educator, Judkins has also been recognized for her work in the cephalopod community. Dr. Judkins has been a member of the Cephalopod International Advisory Council (CIAC) since 2015.[5] In 2018, Dr. Judkins was appointed President of CIAC where she led the council in discussions regarding research and conservation of cephalopods.[10]

Grants

In addition to her position on the CIAC, Heather Judkins has received over 10 million dollars in grants for her research expeditions.[5] Judkins' research is mostly based in the Gulf of Mexico.[2]
