Heavy On Wrestling is a professional wrestling promotion located in Duluth, Minnesota which was founded by Dave Sabick in 2007.[1] In 2008 Jon Wolford invested into Dave's business thus becoming co-owner of Heavy on Wrestling.

History[edit]

Twenty-two-year-old Dave Sabick from Duluth, Minnesota founded Heavy On Wrestling in 2007 in order to support a variety of causes in the Midwest area of the United States, as well as to provide an additional venue for lesser-known wrestlers to compete, perform, and train in the hope that they may some day be scouted and hired by a major TV promotion.[2]

The promotion held its first live event on July 21, 2007 at the Wessman Arena in Superior, Wisconsin and featured Christy Hemme, Nora Greenwald (Molly Holly), "Wild" Bill Irwin, and Baron Von Raschke.[3] The event drew in some 500 spectators and Sabick donated ten percent of the night's proceeds to a local youth wrestling program.[4]

Heavy on Wrestling held its second live event on November 17, 2007 at the Duluth Skydome. The show featured Christy Hemme, Jake "The Snake" Roberts and Solofa Fatu among several other independent wrestlers.[5]

The third event entitled "Crossing The Line" was held June 14, 2008 and featured Nick Dinsmore, Terry Funk, Lacey Von Erich, and The Honky Tonk Man. Capping off the night was an exciting triple threat ladder match between Ben Sailer, Nate Bash, and Joey Envy. The match spilled out in to the crowd. Bash suffered a legitimate head injury when he landed awkwardly on a chair, but he continued the match. Two tables and a step ladder were broken before Sailer climbed to the top, earning him a shot against Arik Cannon for the Heavy on Wrestling Undisputed Championship at a future show. This event grossed more than 30 grand in ticket sales.

The fourth event "Insult To Injury" was held August 15, 2008 at the Hoghead Festival in Proctor, MN.

The fifth event, entitled "Have a Funkin' Nice Day" was held at Mertz Mortarelli Field House on the UWS campus and featured Terry Funk returning for a 2nd appearance,Mick Foley, and Kara Drew. The event was Heavy on Wrestling's most successful to date, drawing in over 1,000 spectators.

Several more house show events (promoted mainly as a partnership with F1rst Wrestling) occurred throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota. Several stars including Jake the Snake, Honky Tonk Man, Rikishi, Scotty 2 Hotty, Al Snow, Buck Zumhofe, and many others were on tour. A stop in Minneapolis and Superior, WI included an all-girls event with appearances by Victoria, Sunny, Stacy "Miss Kitty" Carter, Roxxi, Daffney, Awesome Kong, ODB, Molly Holly, and several others.

"Rumble at the Garden" is scheduled for May 27, 2010 which will include an autograph session with Ric Flair, an appearance by both Baron Von Raschke and Shawn Daivari, and the unveiling of the new HOW championship title belt.

Heavy on Wrestling was contacted by Jerry Lynn in 2013 to host his retirement match. Due to Lynn's deep roots in the Minneapolis area, and Heavy on Wrestling's growing reputation at the time, a plan to provide Jerry with the most professional send off any wrestling organization could give him at the time but more importantly, the right place. The "Last FN Show" as it was called was held on March 23, 2013 and sold out with over 1,000 wrestling fans in attendance. Darin Corbin defeated Tommy Dreamer in what has been historically described as Darin's career making moment. Sabu and Arik Cannon competed in a bloody hardcore match. Adam Pearce fought Undisputed Champion Ben Sailer in a technical clinic. Finally, Jerry Lynn defeated Trask, Xpac, and Horace the Psychopath in a hardcore Fatal Fourway. After the final bell Lynn was presented with a beautiful trophy and he gave a speech to the fans of Minneapolis.

Benjamind Sailer was crowned the first Undisputed Champion at Heavy on Wrestling Have a Funkin Nice Day and held the title until May 23, 2013, a reign of over four years. On May 23 of 2013, only two months to the day following "The Last FN Show," Ben Sailer was defeated by Sheik Ariya Daivari in a triple threat bout that also featured Arik Cannon. This event also featured Goldust, Trevor Murdoch, and The Honkey Tonk Man.

Wanting to branch out to the online world and update the company image, Dave Sabick and Jon Wolford hired a producer by the name of Eric Nordrum in the Summer of 2013. Nordrum built heavyonwrestling.com as well as establishes marketing strageties for the company's social media presence, contracts production crew, and serves as chief producer of Heavy on Wrestling live events.

Heavy on Wrestling held an event in Eau Claire, Wisconsin on October 26, 2013 called Declaration. The event featured the debut of the The Kingz of The Underground Scot Summers and Ryan Genesis who were joined by top independent wrestler Luke Hawx after an assault on Matt Hardy at the end of the event. Ariya Davari retained his championship against Chas Betts who announced the next day on Facebook that he had been signed by WWE's performance system. Ken Anderson appeared at the event along with Lance Hoyt, Horace the Psychopath, Mitch Paradise, Darin Corbin, Sam Knight, Ben Sailer, and more. The event was hailed a success and sold more than 900 tickets.

One month later in St. Paul, Minnesota Heavy on Wrestling held a house show at St. Paul High School which featured a classic tribute and ten bell salute to the late Mad Dog Vachon, a repeat appearance by Mr. Anderson, Rikishi, Armando Estrada, the Kingz of The Underground, Ken Patera, Arik Cannon, champion Ariya Daivari, and more.

Heavy on Wrestling hosted a tour date of Mick Foley's acclaimed comedy show "Tales from wrestling past" on February 21, 2014 at Clyde Iron Works in Duluth, MN. This was the first time Heavy on Wrestling hosted a show that did not feature a wrestling match.

On June 7, 2014 Heavy on Wrestling returned to Clyde Iron Works for an event called Kingdom Come. The Kingz of The Underground were prominently displayed as the centerpiece of Heavy on Wrestling storylines. More questions arose pertaining to the identity of The KOTU's alleged boss. Darin Corbin has claimed to know the identity of the KOTU leader but has repeatedly been shut down by Scot Summers and Ryan Genesis. Luke Hawx faced Hardcore Holly in a match. The match ended with the locker room spilling out to break up an alleged shoot fight between Hawx and Holly. Holly cut a scathing promo on Hawx as he stood outside the ring and apologized to the fans for the non finish.

Heavy on Wrestling will host its biggest event in its history on August 23, 2014 at Legendary Waters Resort and Casino. The event is called Legendary. Confirmed to appear are Roddy Piper, Booker T, Jake the Snake Roberts, Rick Steiner, Scott Steiner, Hardcore Holly, Luke Hawx, Darin Corbin, Scot Summers, Xpac, Trevor Murdoch, ODB, Stevie Richards, Lance Hoyt, Arik Cannon, John Johnson, Horace the Psychopath, and more. Hardcore Holly will face Luke Hawx in a hardcore rules rematch from the June 7th Kingdom Come event. This booking decision has been questioned by some as rumors of the alleged fight between the two still remain unclear. Booker T will serve as guest general manager for the night and Roddy Piper will host Piper's Pit. Lance Hoyt will face champion Ariya Daivari and Trevor Murdoch in a triple threat match for the Undisputed Title.
