Heimdal Security is a cybersecurity software vendor based in Copenhagen, Denmark. The company develops and distributes cloud-based Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) software, that detects malicious activity, prevents and mitigates cybernetic aggressions, antivirus, automatic patch deployment & management, email security, privileged access management, and access governance solutions.
Heimdal Security has participated in several multi-national operations, intended to disbanding e-crime infrastructures, the most notable being GameOver Zeus and Cryptolocker operations, spearheaded by the United States’ Department of Justice.[1].
In March 2020, Heimdal Security was acquired by Marlin Equity Partners[2].
History[edit]
Heimdal Security was founded in 2014 by Morten Kjaersgaard, formerly Chief Commercial Officer at BullGuard[3]. Initially, the company’s intellectual and digital assets were under the ownership of CSIS Group[4], a Copenhagen-based cybersecurity firm, specialized in Threat Intelligence.
In 2011, Heimdal Security’s parent company releases Heimdal Security Agent Corporate or Heimdal Pro to address cybersecurity-related challenges endemic to Small and Medium-Sized Businesses (SMBs) and corporations.
The core-concept behind the products originates from a project showcased during the 19th Edition of Defcon CTF (Capture the Flag) event by ethical hacking group European Nopsled Team[5]
The first version of the product introduced enhanced malware detection, remediation, and mitigation services such as automatic patch management and traffic filtering, the latter being the reverse-engineered form of SecureDNS, CSIS Group’s proprietary internet traffic protection technology.
In early 2014, Heimdal autonomy, dissociating itself from CSIS in terms of the GTM (Go-to-Market) approach, proof of concept, and software functionality.
The company offers six online security products, two Premium suites, and two comprehensive and cybersecurity solutions for the banking sector and SMBs.
In 2016, Heimdal™ Security has received a commendation for the “Most Educational Security Blog”.
Products[edit]
Heimdal Security offers four types of cybersecurity products: Unified Threat Prevention, NGAV (Next-generation Antivirus) Remediation, Privilege Access Management, and E-mail Security.
Unified Threat Prevention Platform[edit]
Heimdal Security’ UTP (Unified Threat Prevention) includes Thor Foresight, the company’s network, and Internet traffic-filtering solution and Forseti, a perimeter scanning and filtering solution that incorporates the recursive DNS technology and addressed to businesses that promote BYOD (Bring Your Own Device).
Thor Foresight[edit]
Thor Foresight is Heimdal Security’s endpoint-level, Internet, and network traffic filtering solution. The product was developed to combat malicious file-based or file-less content absconded in network and communication Internet traffic. The company’s DNS traffic filtering solution complies with modern, passive, Intelligence-driven, threat-hunting solutions, designed to identify and sever the connection between the malicious agent and the corresponding Command & Control (C&C) server.
Forseti[edit]
Forseti is a perimeter security solution, based on the recursive DNS technology, and designed to detect and block malicious agents at network and Internet levels.
N.G.A.V. Remediation[edit]
Heimdal Security’s N.G.A.V. tier includes Thor Vigilance, the company’s Antivirus. Thor Vigilance is designed to work in tandem with Thor Foresight. From a technical standpoint, Thor Vigilance uses standardized malware detection and removal practices such as sand-boxing, backdoor inspection, local file scanning, local signature scanning, local registry scanning, and heuristics.
Privileged Access Management (P.A.M)[edit]
This category includes Thor AdminPrivilege, a P.A.M (Privileged Access Management), and Access Governance solution that facilitates user operational rights curation within an institutional computer network.
Email security[edit]
The company’s Email Security tier features two products: MailSentry Email Security and MailSentry Fraud-Prevention.
MailSentry Email Security[edit]
MailSentry Email Security is a spam filtering[ix] and deep attachment scanning software. The product is designed to detect and combat malicious activity associated with electronic mailing systems such as phishing or spearphishing.

- VectorN Detection - complex heuristics/behavioral pattern analyzer that employs Artificial Intelligence (AI) for data gathering and Machine Learning(ML) for data modeling.
- X-Ploit Resilience – automatic patching module, modeled after Microsoft’s ConfigMgr and Windows Server Update Services (W.S.U.S). The company committed several modifications including delivery mechanism, support for 3rd-party , and proprietary software
