Heinz Ackermans

Heinz Ackermans, (born Heinrich Kleine-Klopres on 29th October 1949) is a contemporary German sculptor and art collector. He currently resides in Mallorca, Spain with his wife, where he continues to work. His works explore the form of the human body in his own unique interpretation, working in multiple forms of media.

Personal life and beginnings

Born in Müllheim an der Ruhr, Germany. He started his working life as a seminarian in the Catholic Church; he soon realised his real passion in life lay not with the church but in the world of art. He enrolled in Folkwangschule Essen after impressing the admissions board with his sketches. Upon graduating from the prestigious art school, he entered the world of teaching. He taught at Gesamtschule Rodenkirchen.

In 1986, he married his first wife, Simone Ackermans, and moved to Xanten, Germany, where he began producing his own work. The couple had their first child in 1988, a daughter, followed by a son in 1991 and another daughter in 1993. During their marriage, he became a well-known and respected art collector throughout the German art community. Together they collected art from well-known artists such as Katharina Fritsch, Martin Honert, Reinhard Mucha, Thomas Ruff, and Thomas Schütte. In 1997, the family relocated to London, UK, where he continued to collect art. The couple divorced in 2005.

He married his second wife, Martina Schmitlin, in 2010 after many years together, becoming stepfather to her 3 children. Martina became a great inspiration and one of the major driving forces for his return to creating art.

Work

In the 1980s, Heinz produced a number of sculptures from plastic building blocks.

In further years, his inspiration became his children, creating life-sized sculptures of each of them and even creating a sculpture which was donated to their kindergarten. Many of these statues can still be seen today, dotted around his home in Mallorca and all over Europe.

After years of taking a back seat to creating art, he made his comeback with an exhibition in Istanbul, Turkey, Them There in 2015. He continued to drive his work forward; he created two exhibitions in 2017, Semana Santa in Palma, Mallorca, Spain and I Still Feel Raw in Düsseldorf, Germany. In 2019, he presented his exhibition Lost Tribes in Berlin, Germany. He has sold his art around the world and he continues to gain notoriety in the art world.
