History
Founded in Brooklyn, New York, in 2013 by personal injury lawyers Marc J. Held and Philip M. Hines, the firm acquired the approximately 35 year old law firm of Lazarowitz & Manganillo, LLP and expanded and opened its second law office in mid-town Manhattan. In 2017, the law firm of Held & Hines expanded again and tripled the size of its’ Manhattan office. Held & Hines remains the only boutique law firm with main offices located in both midtown Manhattan and Brooklyn, New York. Held & Hines, LLP has represented a number of celebrities, musicians, authors, companies and sovereign nations. Many of their cases are followed by the press and media.

Past and Current Cases:
- Represents NYS Uber Drivers against Uber in a class-action lawsuit[2] for breach of contract, wrongful conversion of tips, false advertisement and misclassification of employment.
- Represents NYC residents who are 62 years of age or older and/or disabled and have been wrongfully evicted from their apartments in buildings that have been converted from rentals to condominiums or co-operatives in a class-action suit against developers
- Represented all the Unit Owners of a Condominium against a Sponsor who failed to complete construction and raided the Reserve Fund Account of the Condominium. The Sponsor was banned for life from selling real estate in the State of New York.
- Advised a sovereign nation who wanted to rescind a real estate transaction.
- Represented a Spouse who contracted a sexually transmitted disease from her adulterous husband.
- Represented residents who were bit and infected by bed bugs resulting in one of the largest settlements for this type of case.
Philip M. Hines
Philip M. Hines is a founding member of Held & Hines, LLP. Mr. Hines devotes a large portion of his practice to defending civil rights and advocating for prisoner’s rights and the rights of the wrongfully convicted, having obtained compensation for scores of victims of sexual abuse, excessive force, religious discrimination, false arrest, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, police harassment, and denial of medical care.
Mr. Hines also represents victims involved in motor vehicle accidents, trip and fall accidents, construction accidents, and victims who have suffered catastrophic injuries or death. Additionally Mr. Hines represents individuals and business in litigating a broad spectrum of commercial, contract, real estate, and employment matters, including representing Uber drivers in a New York class action lawsuit filed against Uber alleging misclassification of their employment status, wrongful conversion of their gratuities, breach of contract, false advertising, and other claims.

UBER CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT: ORTEGA vs. UBER[3] Case-Breach of contract, False Advertisement, Hourly Wage, Fraud, Mis-classification- The law firm of Held & Hines LLP litigated the federal class-action case which resulted in approximately $83,000,000 to be paid out to New York State Uber drivers.
THE GAME CHANGER IN REAL ESTATE BROKER COMMISSION CASES[4] Held & Hines, LLP litigated a broker commission case which has been cited as the "game-changer" in real estate broker commission law, a New York State appeals court issued a groundbreaking decision that protects buyers’ brokers when they are bypassed on commissions, and are not involved in final negotiations, following a lawsuit over a NYC home.
225 RECTOR CONDOMINIUM CASE: ON THE BRINK: DEVELOPER GOES BROKE AND LEAVES THE BUILDING INCOMPLETE AND THE UNIT OWNERS STRANDED[5] Unit owners were living in a condominium building in Manhattan whereby the Sponsor had ran out of money, failed to finish construction, raided the reserve fund account and left the operating account of the building without any monies to pay for the salary of its’ employees, oil to heat the building or monies to continue to operate the building for the coming week. Held & Hines LLP put a plan together to rehabilitate the building, which included working alongside an appointed receiver, getting the sponsor’s bank to create an emergency fund to pay the expenses of the building and commencing a lawsuit against the sponsor and other related parties who contributed to the plight of the unit owners.
