Helen Guthrie
Helen Marie Guthrie, born Helen Marie Janning, (August 17, 1930-August 27, 2015) was a White House communications staff member, congressional candidate, mother of eight children, a Dust Bowl survivor, labor activist, philanthropist, and Noble Drilling employee.[1][2] She served as a member of the White House Staff in the White House Office serving at the "Pleasure of the President" for President Ronald Reagan in 1986.
She was born in Custer City, Oklahoma and grew up during the Dust Bowl. She married Lawrence Simpson Guthrie of Clinton, Oklahoma in 1952 and moved to Tulsa in 1956. They had eight children together. They divorced in 1976.[1]
She was assistant to the president of Noble Drilling Company, where she worked for 13 years. In 1990, she ran for US Congress in the First District of Oklahoma.[1]
One of the last things President Reagan did before leaving for his historic summit with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev was to say good-bye to her on her last day at the White House. She and her family donated the Oklahoma Flag to the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. She appealed a case to the US Supreme Court regarding Campaign Finance Reform.[3] She and her family donated a sailboat to Southwestern Oklahoma State University. She is co-author of the book, "Guthrie's Oklahoma Stories".[4]
