Helen Jackson is an American nuclear physicist, Artificial Intelligence/ Machine Learning engineer[1][2], software engineer, author[3][4][5][6], and inventor [7]. She was the first known person to earn a PhD in Nuclear Physics from the Air Force Institute of Technology.[8] She was among the first known African American women to specialize in the [radiation effects of semiconductors][9] Jackson has discovered, developed, and patented a configuration for radiation hardness for spaceborne based on gallium nitride semiconductor electronics and also developed quantum nano transport equations for gallium nitride heterostructure semiconductors. [10] Jackson’s characterization of such semiconductors can be linked to their use as inverters and power supplies in today’s data centers,[11][12][13], and the backbone of the current artificial intelligence revolution.
Early life and education
Helen Jackson was born in Washington, D.C., to parents Willie Mae Collins and Robert Murray.[14][15] She experienced family separation, poverty, and abuse while achieving high academic results.[16] Her life consisted of childhood challenges, followed by achievements in science and education, and becoming an accomplished physicist, inventor, and engineer. [17] Jackson was a straight-A student who studied multiple languages and STEM subjects. In junior high school at Taft Junior High School (also known as Taft Middle School), Jackson was IQ-tested, with a score of 145, considered “exceptionally gifted”.[18][19] Also, during her time at McKinley High School (also known as President William McKinley High School), she was encouraged by her teachers to attend the top-rated high school at the time, Woodrow Wilson High School (now known as the Jackson-Reed High School) in Washington D.C. Outside of school, Helen spent a lot of her time at the library, and credits the DC public libraries with her success and survival while living alone. She would work trigonometry and geometry problems from library books for fun and make electronic gadgets, cameras, and telescopes from scrap materials. Likewise, she learned five languages which include French, Latin, Arabic, Swahili, and Russian and excelled in STEM subjects like math and science.[20] Later, Helen scored a perfect 1600 on the SAT and was recruited by prestigious universities, but did not attend due to a lack of support, no mentors, and early marriage challenges.[21] [22][23]
Academic background
Dr. Helen Jackson completed her doctoral studies at the U.S. Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT), earning a Ph.D. in Applied Physics (Nuclear) in 2014. Her dissertation, titled *“The Effect of Variation of Silicon Nitride Passivation Layer on Electron Irradiated Aluminium Gallium Nitride HEMT Structures”* (May 19, 2014), examined the impact of semiconductor passivation layers on radiation tolerance in GaN-based devices.[24][25][26]
Before attending AFIT, Jackson participated in the Fisk–Vanderbilt Master’s-to-Ph.D. Bridge Program,[27] completing doctoral coursework in Nuclear Physics at Vanderbilt University (2006–2008). She earned her Master of Science in Physics from Fisk University (2004–2006), where her thesis, *“Charge Transport of Cadmium Telluride as a Nuclear Radiation Detector,”* investigated semiconductor detector performance under radiation exposure.[28][29] She also studied astrophysics at the Swinburne University of Technology’s Centre for Astrophysics and Supercomputing, and earned her Bachelor of Science in Physics from Tennessee State University.
Dr. Jackson’s professional appointments include research and engineering roles with Battelle Memorial Institute, the United States Department of Energy—at both Brookhaven National Laboratory and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory—as well as positions with Wright State University and the AFRL.[30]Building on her work in the physics of semiconductor materials, Dr. Jackson developed and filed a patent for a formula and thickness configuration that improves the radiation tolerance of heterostructure semiconductors, aligning with her broader goal of designing robust materials for extreme environments (U.S. Patent Application No. 13/871,255), disclosed on April 26, 2013.[31][32][33][34]

Although Jackson’s pursuit of higher education was delayed after her first marriage and being a single mother, she later attended the University of the District of Columbia and Tennessee State. Dr. Helen Jackson worked as an Aerospace Electronics Engineer at NASA from 1978 to 1982. She worked in satellite systems and space shuttle launch support, contributing technical expertise to electronic systems used in NASA’s major missions during that period.[35][36] She developed parity error checking code for downlinked data from Earth Resources Technology satellites. She was also responsible for Space Shuttle data security and ground support operations for the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS).[37] While at NASA, she met her second husband, John Jackson, whom she later married.[38][39] She was later selected as an astronaut candidate (to be a mission specialist with TDRSS as the payload), but declined for her children.[40][41][42][43][44][45][46] Notably, when Helen Jackson turned down the opportunity to be the first Black female astronaut, Mae Jemison was chosen instead.[47]
Later, Jackson earned a PhD in Applied Nuclear Physics.[48][49][50] While doing her PhD at the Air Force Institute of Technology, her chair and advisors realized that Jackson was the first person to complete the Applied Physics program with a concentration in nuclear physics at the PhD level.[51] AFIT typically graduated Nuclear Engineers.[52] Jackson has been recognized for Who’s Who in Information Technology, Who’s Who in America in 2021, the Shirley Chisholm Award in 2022, and has an annual homeschooling award named after her by the Texas Education Association.[53]

Personal life and advocacy
At the pinnacle of her successful career as a mathematician and engineer at NASA, Jackson encountered challenges related to her children’s schooling experience while living in Northern Virginia, which later became untenable.[72][73][74][75][76][77] Upon relocating to Texas with her family, Jackson opted for homeschooling for her children. She emerged as an advocate for homeschooling rights, and her efforts, along with her court testimony, contributed to the recognition and legalization of homeschooling in Texas.[78][79][80][81][82][83][84] Jackson’s advocacy extended to national awareness. Her case became part of a broader movement advancing the legal acceptance of homeschooling in the United States, and she is recognized as a pioneer by the Texas Home School Coalition. Her name is engraved on the THSC Hall of Fame in Austin, Texas, where she was honored in 2007.[85] Jackson’s name is also recognized in a yearly homeschool award by the Texas Education Association. In some circles, she is called the “Rosa Parks of Homeschooling”.
Legacy and impact
Helen Jackson is among the first African American women to hold a PhD in Physics [86], a fellow of the African Scientific Association[87], and has been featured in prominent scientific publications. Her dedication to humanitarian outreach (January 1993 – June 2014) has been exemplified through her orchestration, in conjunction with the Swiss government and the U.S. Department of State, of the relocation of 11 of the “Lost Boys of Sudan”[88], victims of the Sudanese civil war, from a refugee camp, and bringing them to Nashville, Tennessee. There, they successfully resettled and started a new life. She also assisted in the resettlement of Eritrean refugees during their war with Ethiopia, housing them in her home. In addition, Helen has mentored with the New York Academy of Sciences NeXXt Scholar program [89][90][91][92] (where her mentee is now an Atmospheric Science PhD student).
