Helen Lucia Mary Pixell Goodrich (25 July 1878 – 29 May 1957) was a British zoologist and researcher notable for her studies on marine fauna and protozoa. She graduated with a BSc in Zoology from Bedford College, University of London in 1901, and in 1904, she was appointed Junior Demonstrator at Bedford. Pixell's research in Canada, facilitated by a Reid Fellowship, focused on the marine life of the Georgian Strait, and resulted in a notable paper on the subject. In 1912, she left Canada upon receiving a Beit Memorial Fellowship. In 1913, she married Dr. E. S. Goodrich, a comparative vertebrate morphologist at Oxford, and together they continued their research on protozoa. Pixell was awarded a DSc in 1915 for her contributions to zoology.
Early life
Helen Lucia Mary Pixell was born on 25 July 1878[1] to the Reverend Charles Henry Vincent Pixell and Edith Mary Wilson.[2][3][better source needed] She was one of twelve children, with nine sisters and two brothers. Her father, a clergyman, was born in Kings Norton, and her mother was born in Cambridge.[citation needed]
Education and career
Goodrich graduated with a BSc in zoology from Bedford College, University of London, in 1901. In 1904 she became a Junior Demonstrator at Bedford College.[4]
Pixell received a Reid Fellowship in 1910 that funded her until 1913[5] and enable her to conduct research marine fauna.[4]
In 1911, she was provided with quarters by the Canadian Government at Departure Bay, where she dredged British Columbian waters off Vancouver Island. The material she collected was presented to the British Natural History Museum (NUMMI) for ecological examination.[6][not in citation given][7][8]
Pixell received recognition for her scientific work, including her qualifications in the Sanitary Inspectors Examination Board in 1908.[citation needed]
Pixell received a Beit Memorial Fellowships for Medical Research in 1913.[9]
In 1915, she was awarded a DSc for her research.[10][11]
In 1942 an M.A. was awarded to her.[12][more detail needed]
Research
She researched oral hygiene and the role of mouthwash as an antiseptic,[13] and published details on making mouthwash.[14]
Her research on Entamoeba histolytica was reviewed in a 1916 volume of Nature.[15] Her 1918 book, Canning and Bottling, was briefly reviewed in the Saturday Review of Politics, Literature, Science and Art.[16]
While at Oxford, she worked on the science of fruit preservation and bee diseases.[17][18] In a 1997 book on science conducted at Oxford, Jack Morrell described Helen as "a dominating figure in the laboratory compared with her husband".[19]

Selected publications
Helen Lucia Mary Pixell was known her oer writing in the field of protozoology and marine biology. She also contributed to the ninth edition of Bolles Lee's Microtomist's vade-mecum[20] and her contribution was noted in a 1929 review of the book.[21]

Personal life
Pixell married Edwin Stephen Goodrich in 1913;[22] he was a comparative vertebrate morphologist. While they shared similar professional interests, they kept their scientific work largely separate, with two notable instances of collaboration on projects. They traveled together on several scientific expeditions, including at least one focused on research.[citation needed]
Goodrich died in 1957.[23]
