The Honourable Justice Helen Mary Joan Rofe is a judge of the Federal Court of Australia, sitting in the Melbourne registry. She was appointed on 12 July 2021.[1][2]
Education and early career
Rofe graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Science (1988), a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) (1992) and a Master of Laws (1995). She was admitted as a legal practitioner in 1993, worked as a solicitor at Sly & Weigall (later Deacons), Arthur Robinson & Hedderwicks (now Allens) and Blake Dawson Waldron (now Ashurst), and was called to the Victorian Bar in 2001. She took silk in 2014, practising principally in intellectual property matters, and served as President of the Intellectual Property Society of Australia and New Zealand from 2007 to 2009 and Junior Vice-President of the Victorian Bar Council in 2021.[1]
Judicial and tribunal service
Rofe was appointed a judge of the Federal Court on 12 July 2021; a ceremonial sitting to welcome her was held on 12 May 2022 and the transcript is published by the Court.[3] The Australian Government Directory records her commission commencing in June 2021.[4] On 15 December 2022 she was appointed a Deputy President of the Copyright Tribunal of Australia.[5] Her appointment to the Federal Court was welcomed by the Law Council of Australia.[6][7] The appointment was also announced publicly by the Attorney-General’s office.[8][9]
