Helène Whittaker (born 13 March 1958) is a Canadian-Norwegian archaeologist and scholar of antiquity. She has written extensively on topics relating to the Bronze Age Aegean, ancient Greek and Roman language and culture, and Early Christianity. As of 2022[update], she is Professor of Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at the University of Gothenburg in the Sweden.[1]
Education
Whittaker studied languages and archeology at the University of Bergen, finishing her candidata philologiae in 1983. She continued her studies at the University of Tromsø and the University of Toronto, completing a PhD in 1996.[1]
Academic career
Having been a senior lecturer at the University of Tromsø in 1994–2004, she was promoted to full professor at the same university in 2004. In 2009, she was the Peter W. Warren visiting professor in Aegean prehistory at the University of Bristol.[1] In 2013, she accepted the position as professor of Classical Archaeology and Ancient History at the department of Historical Studies at the University of Gothenburg.[2] Together with Maria Vaïopoulou, she directed the Greek-Swedish Vlochos Archaeological Project at Thessalian Vlochos in 2016–2018.[3]
