Hellbenders is an adult animated web series created, written, and starring Zach Hadel and Chris O'Neill, often credited under their pseudonyms psychicpebbles and OneyNG. The storyline centers on two best friends, Chris and Zach, fictionalized and animated versions of O'Neill and Hadel. While the show has been seen as a buddy comedy, Hellbenders plots generally contain large amount of surreal and off-color elements, accompanied with a mixture of dark and black comedy elements, as well as shock value.

The series is produced by Hadel and O'Neill's production studio Sleepy Cabin. Online animation studio YOTTA has also contributed to the series since "A Hellbenders Christmas", assisting with inbetweens.[1] It is distributed on YouTube through Zach's channel psychicpebbles, and on their website through blip.[2] Intended for mature audiences, the show has achieved a cult following and is often cited as an Internet phenomenon, gaining millions of views for each video.

Broadcasting[edit]

The series is broadcast through video-sharing website Youtube and web series platform Blip.[2] The YouTube version features a hellbenders.tv and donation links, while Blip versions, as well as being released earlier than the YouTube versions, contains deleted scenes, behind the scenes content and fun facts.[3]

During 2013, Hadel and O'Neill announced they were pitching to various networks around the United States, with O'Neill announcing on his Facebook page that they had pitched to cable network Adult Swim.[4] In February 2013, they revealed that the series was rejected due to the network already having another show with similar themes, Casper Kelly and Dave Willis' Your Pretty Face is Going to Hell.[5]

Characters[edit]

  • Chris (voiced by Chris O'Neill) - Chris appears to be more calm and reasonable in comparison to Zach. He also acts much more like a leader than Zach. In "Applooza", it is shown that Chris is apparently a great speaker when he needs to be. Chris has also appeared to be very supportive in various episodes, encouraging Zach whenever he loses hope.
  • Zach (voiced by Zach Hadel) - Zach is slightly more quiet and odd than Chris. He also laughs manically at strange times. Adding to this, he seems to make much more insane facial expressions than Chris. He also gets spontaneous nosebleeds when he gets too excited.
  • Frank (voiced by Mick Lauer) - Frank is Chris and Zach's neighbour, who has yet to make an appearance, but was announced as a character on the Hellbenders website.[6] He has a pet dog named Shepard.
