Hellenophile[lower-alpha 1] was the debut solo concert residency by American drag queen and singer-songwriter Regina Del Rio. Though primarily held at Athens' Lycabettus Hill Theater, the residency features shows in Thessaloniki and across the Athens metropolitan area. The residency began on May 1, 2034, in Athens, and concluded on July 19, 2037, in Kallithea.
Del Rio described the show as a "love letter" to Greece, incorporating elements of both contemporary and ancient Greek culture into the show. Similar to the artist’s touring concerts, the residency performance was segmented into seven themed acts: Epic, inspired by the works of Homer; Cosmos, inspired by constellation myths; Hoplite, referencing ancient warfare and the Battle of Thermopylae.
The residency was met with universal acclaim, with praise going to Del Rio's showmanship, connection with her audience, and "genuine" love for Greek culture. Despite accusations of cultural appropriation from several non-Greek audiences, Greek audiences and academics defended Del Rio, asserting that the show was an example of cultural appreciation. Hellenophile received a total attendance of over 489,000 and a commercial gross of $53.1 million from 94 sold-out concerts. The residency significantly impacted Greek economy, stimulating an increase in tourism and inspired several international acts to include Greece in their tour schedules.
Background[edit]
Del Rio often teased that if she were to ever host a concert residency, it would be held in Greece, rather than the more traditional locations such as Las Vegas, New York, or London. The singer-drag queen had a lifelong interest in ancient Greek mythology, and earned a doctorate in the subject in 2028, followed by an associate degree in classical studies.
