Baek Ga-young(Korean: ๋ฐฑ๊ฐ์; born October 23, 1987) is a South Korean singer-songwriter. Hello Ga-Young(Korean: ์๋ ํ์ ๊ฐ์) is her stage name. Before beginning her solo project, she was a member of Joa Band, a Korean indie band, from 2009 to 2013. She debuted as a singer-songwriter in December 2013, with her first single "A Song of Old Lovers" (Korean: ์ฐ๋ฆฌ ๋๋ฌด ์ค๋ ์๊ผ๋ ๊ทธ ๋ง). Her discographies were released by her independent music label helloeumak(Korean: ์๋ ์์ ), before she established a partnership with Interpark Entertainment in 2017.[3] Except for some soundtrack appearances, all of her songs released so far were written by herself.[5] From 2013 to present, Hello Ga-Young has released two albums, three extended plays, and seventeen singles.
Career
2009-2013: a bassist of Joa Band
A musical career of Baek Ga-young has begun as she joined Joa Band as a bassist in 2009. Because it was typical for Joa band members that the member who wrote the song sings the song[4], she began writing and singing her own songs in the band. Her first song in Joa Band was "Life Is Unpredictable(Hot Choco)" (Korean: ์ธ์์ ์ ์๊ฐ ์์ด(ํซ์ด์ฝ)). She composed and sang three more songs, "์ ์ง๋ด๋ ์ข ์ด๋ ๋" (Literal meaning: Are you doing all right?), "๊ธธ์ ์๊ธฐ ์ํด์" (Literal meaning: for the purpose of getting lost), and "A World Without Time" (Korean: 10๋ถ์ด ๋ฆ์ด ์ด๋ณํ๋ ์ธ์). "์ ์ง๋ด๋ ์ข ์ด๋ ๋" was her first song to be introduced on a television show, played on "2 Days & 1 Night" of KBS2.[6]
2013-2015: single debut, Those Moments
She started a small music label helloeumak, with her friend Cheon See-woo(Korean: ์ฒ์์ฐ) as an A&R executive[7]. Her debut single, "A Song of Old Lovers"[8], released on December 30, 2013.[9] On March 20, 2014, Her first extended play Opponent Process Theory(Korean: ๋ฐ๋๊ณผ์ ์ด๋ก ) was released, including the songs of two single "A Song of Old Lovers" and "Just Because I Like You"(Korean: ๋ค๊ฐ ์ข์), with three more new songs-"I'm Coming to You"(Korean: ๋์๊ฒ ๊ฐ๋ค), "Opponent Process Theory", and "Dish"(Korean: ๊ทธ๋ฆ).[8]
In 2015, Hello Ga-young unveils her first album Those Moments(Korean: ์๊ฐ์ ์๊ฐ).[10] On the first two week of its release, the album ranked second at the K-Indie Chart vol.48[11], a Korean Independent Music Chart released twice a month determined by album sales and released by Mirrorball Music in South Korea. Those Moments remained in the top 30 of the chart for 14 weeks(vol.48~vol.54[12], from February 11, 2015 to May 25, 2015). On July 9 2015, she was featured on Picnic Live Sopung, a Korean music program of MBC Music, and performed "Sleepless Summer Night" and "A World Without Time".[13]
2016-2018: Feelings, Collection Of Short Stories
Her musical career of 2016 began as the second extended play Feelings(Korean: ์ข์ํ๋ ๋ง์) was released on January 19. Later in March, in early spring South Korea[7], Hello Ga-Young announced her one-year music project Collection Of Short Stories(Korean: ๋จํธ์ง). The first single of the project was "Collection Of Short Stories - Winter To Spring"(Korean: ๋จํธ์ง - ๊ฒจ์ธ์์ ๋ด). Following the first single, "Collection Of Short Stories - Satelite"(Korean: ๋จํธ์ง - ์ธ๊ณต์์ฑ), "Collection Of Short Stories - Hang In There When You Feel Down"(Korean: ๋จํธ์ง - ์ฐ์ธํ ๋ ๋ค์ ์ต์ ์ ๋คํด์ค), and "Collection Of Short Stories - Where Is Love"(Korean: ๋จํธ์ง - ์ด๋์ ์์๊น) were respectively released in summer[14], autumn[15], and winter[16]. She also wrote and published her first essay "Sleepless Summer Night" during the project. The book's title was inspired by her single "Sleepless Summer Night"(Korean: ์ธ์ ๊ฐ ์ค๋ช ์ด ํ์ํ ๋ฐค) previously released in 2014, and its each chapter's title was inspired by the titles of four singles of Collection of Short Stories.[17] The project ended as her third extended play Collection Of Short Stories(Almost Like Missing You) was released on March 17, 2017, including four Collections Of Short Stories singles as well as her new song "Almost Like Missing You"(Korean: ๊ทธ๋ฆฌ์์ ๊ฐ๊น์ด). The album ranked third at the K-Indie Chart vol.98.[18] The chart also noted that the album contains abundant feelings of four seasons.
2019-present: something special
When her second album something special(Korean: ํน๋ณํ ๋๋จํ ๊ฒ) was released, her solo concert celebrating the album release also took place at Ewha Girls' High School's 100th-Anniversary Hall, from February 16 to 17, 2019.[4]
