Helluva Boss is an American adult animated musical comedy web series created, directed, written and produced by Vivienne "VivziePop" Medrano. Despite taking place within the same universe as Hazbin Hotel,[1] also created by Medrano, the series features a different cast of characters and storyline.[2][3][4] As Medrano described it, while both shows share the same setting, Hazbin Hotel is about redemption and consequences, while Helluva Boss follows "characters and societies that already exist in Hell" with the main focus on the interpersonal relationship between both characters.[5] The pilot was released on November 25, 2019,[6] while the first episode of the first season, produced by SpindleHorse Toons, was released on October 31, 2020.[7] The first season will be released exclusively to Medrano's YouTube channel[8][9] like Medrano has done for other animations.[10][4] The second episode was released on December 9, 2020.[11]
Premise[edit]
The series follows the employees of I.M.P. (Immediate Murder Professionals), an assassination company in Hell, on their many different jobs.[12][13][14][15][11] The members of I.M.P. include Blitzo (the 'o' is silent), the boss of the venture, along with weapons specialist Moxxie, powerhouse Millie, and the receptionist, a Hellhound called Loona. With the help of an ancient book obtained from a Goetial demon of Hell, who goes by the name of Stolas, they manage to make their work done, and together they attempt to keep their business running.

The enthusiastic imp Blitzo and his subordinate employees—Moxxie, Millie (Moxxie's wife), and Loona (Blitzo's adopted daughter and the I.M.P. receptionist)—run an assassination agency called the Immediate Murder Professionals (I.M.P.). Some backstory is provided, as shown in a flashback, when Blitzo steals a book used to make a portal to the living world from Stolas, one of the Goetial demons of Hell after having sex with him, and when the group is shown accidentally shooting a small child named Eddie while aiming for someone else. The group later kills and disembowels Eddie after discovering he was the right target their client wanted them to kill after all, and drops off his dismembered body in a bag to his mother on live TV. 1 | "Murder Family" | Vivienne Medrano | Medrano & Brandon Rogers | Samantha Ambriz, Thomas Brooks & Nick Swift | October 31, 2020
An affable school-teacher named Mrs. Mayberry (Mara Wilson) video calls her husband on his birthday, only to realize that her husband has been cheating on her with another woman named Martha (Jinkx Monsoon). In a fit of explosive rage, she attacks Martha and kills her husband with a chainsaw and shotgun, before committing suicide after realizing what she has done—all to the shock of her class, who witness this via the still-on video chat. However, it's revealed that Martha survived and became a filthy-rich woman who is praised as a "hero" for surviving the attack. Mrs. Mayberry, now a demon, hires I.M.P. to take Martha out. During the first attempt on the assassination, Moxxie's hesitation to kill a mother and ruin a seemingly innocent family deliberately causes Blitzo to miss his shot, alerting Martha and her family, who then reveal their true, villainous nature and proceed to chase them. Blitzo and Millie flee, but Moxxie is captured by the children. Millie attempts to kill Ralphie (Maxwell Atoms), Martha's husband, only to be knocked out. Meanwhile, as he's running for his life from a shotgun-wielding Martha, Blitzo (who's shot) receives a call from Stolas (Bryce Pinkham), and after hastily talking, Blitzo gets captured by Martha. Moxxie finds out the family are murderous, gun-wielding cannibals when he wakes up, tied to a chair in a room adorned with dead people and animals. He escapes, fatally shoots Martha from behind, and rescues Blitzo and Millie, just as they're about to be shot (after being burned at the stake didn't work). Moxxie stays behind longer than the others in order to kill Ralphie and the kids as well. However, despite calling them monsters, he decides not to kill them and that they should still have a chance at a life and a purpose, so he calls the local authorities to deal with them and have them answer for their crimes. Right before he heads back through the portal to Hell, the police (who've surrounded the house) instead blow up the family along with their house. Moxxie witnesses all of this before being dragged back by Blitzo. Back in Hell, Blitzo, Millie, Loona, and Mrs. Mayberry celebrate over a cake, while Moxxie sits in complete shock, trying to comprehend that he caused a whole family's death. Musical numbers: "Teacher's Song"
2 | "Loo Loo Land" | Vivienne Medrano | Medrano & Brandon Rogers | Seth Anderholm, Zach Giering, Jess Sims & Paul Villeco | December 9, 2020
A cry in the night awakens Stolas. After a brief exchange with his wife, he goes to check on their daughter, Octavia (nicknamed Via). Octavia had a nightmare and so her father sings a lullaby of reassurance that she will be okay while also taking her to see the cosmos in all its majesty before the apocalypse. Years later, Octavia (Barrett Wilbert Weed) wakes up from hearing the yelling of her mother, Stella (Georgina Leahy). After finding out about Stolas's affair with Blitzo the imp (the lowest class of demon), the classist Stella is enraged about Stolas besmirching the prestige of the Goetia family. Octavia (now going through a goth phase) goes to eat breakfast while her mother leaves the kitchen in disgust. Stolas tries to bond with his daughter, but she's emotionally blank for the moment while his wife (still yelling on the other-side of the palace) is still emotionally volatile. Wanting to get out of the house and away from his wife, he decides to take Octavia to Loo Loo Land, an amusement park that she enjoyed as a kid, with I.M.P. (with the exception of Loona) serving as their bodyguards. During the day, Moxxie tries to win a prize for Millie, while Blitzo gets into a fight with an old circus coworker called the Robotic Fizzarolli a.k.a. Robo Fizz (Alex Brightman), who is hated by both Blitzo and Octavia for personal reasons, all the while imp assassins attempt to mug Stolas. After his daughter ran away from the Fizzarolli and fiends (friends) show, Stolas finds Octavia inside the funhouse ride to talk about how things have changed. Octavia is angry about home not feeling like home anymore and Stolas tries to explain about his relationship with his wife and his coming out, but can't find the right words to say. Octavia expresses that she feels Stolas will leave her behind in favor of Blitzo, due to their business and sexual partnership. Stolas assures her that that would never happen, and they leave Loo Loo Land, their relationship strengthened, while it burns to the ground due to Blitzo attempting to kill Robo Fizz, who is subsequently eaten by an escaped animal from the park's petting zoo. An exhausted and injured Blitzo, Moxxie, and Millie leave with Stolas and Octavia as the episode wraps up. Musical numbers: "You Will Be Okay" and "Loo Loo Land" |
Production and release[edit]
In June 2019, Medrano noted that she was working with Erica Lindbeck, Brock Baker, Brandon Rogers on a "new project,"[16] likely referring to Helluva Boss.[lower-alpha 2] In August, she posted illustrations of the main cast of characters.[17] The pilot was cast by voice actor Kellen Goff and voice directed by Medrano and Rick Zieff. The company Horseless Cowboy assisted Medrano with voice work during the first season, with Horvitz and Medrano voice directing.[13] According to Medrano, the influence on developing Helluva Boss was to develop a backup project with the same "demons in Hell" formula and concept under her complete creative control in case anything should happen to delay or cancel Hazbin Hotel. Later, Lucas Bermudez of Screen Rant attributed the success of Hazbin Hotel as the sole reason for Helluva Boss being greenlit.[18]
On November 25, 2019, the pilot was released on Medrano's YouTube channel.[19] Medrano contributed her writing and animation skills for this episode. Writing production for more episodes began in December 2019,[20] with 8 episodes ordered.[13] For these episodes, Sara "Serval" Fisher worked as an animator, Sam Miller as a background designer, and Eddie Mead as a cleanup artist.[lower-alpha 3][lower-alpha 4] In December 2019, Medrano reported that she and Rogers were writing episode plots for the upcoming season, and were looking for storyboard artists.[20][lower-alpha 5] Episode writing continued into January 2020.[lower-alpha 6]
In June 2020, Medrano stated her intent to feature more Black characters in Helluva Boss and Hazbin Hotel in a Tweet where she called on Black animators to share their work with her as a resumé to potentially be hired for work on the series in order to help "talented people in need of opportunities."[21] A few months later, in August 2020, the recording for the first eight episodes of season 1 was completed, and Lucas Bermudez of ScreenRant predicted that more episodes of Helluva Boss would be released to YouTube "as a web series" because of the COVID-19 pandemic, while also mentioning the news that Hazbin Hotel had been picked up as a series by A24.[18][lower-alpha 7]
In October 2020, the first episode of season 1 was released on Halloween (October 31, 2020).[lower-alpha 8] She stated on October 7 that the season would be started in fall 2020 but not all the episodes would be dropped at once, with the first eight episodes serving as the beginning of a "much grander season"[22] and said, on October 31, that the "first self-made season of a cartoon has begun."[23] This contrasted with news that the first season would be released in late 2021.[12] In the episode, Rogers and Horvitz return as Blitzo and Moxxie, and while Lindbeck returns as Loona, she is replaced by Vivian Nixon as the voice of Millie. Baker was replaced by Bryce Pinkham as Stolas. Guest stars of the episode include Jinkx Monsoon, Mara Wilson and Maxwell Atoms. Wilson voices a former human teacher at Puppies Junior School who committed murder-suicide after her husband had an affair with a mistress named Martha,[lower-alpha 9] while Monsoon voices said mistress,[7] a wife who appears to be "happy and wholesome" on the surface, is actually homicidal (along with the rest of her family), while Atoms voices Ralphie,[7] the husband of Martha. Additionally, Medrano voiced a "random cashier lady."[lower-alpha 10] The same day, Jefferson Friedman released a single from the first episode entitled "Stolas Speaks".[24] On November 15, the official Twitter account for the show stated that the second episode would be "comin' soon."[25] Medrano shared several teasers for the second on her Instagram and Twitter. On December 8, 2020, the official Helluva Boss Twitter account announced that the next episode, titled "Loo Loo Land", would be released the following day.[26]
LGBTQ representation[edit]
Helluva Boss has various LGBTQ characters, specifically a bisexual demon named Moxxie,[27] and a pansexual demon named Blitzo.[28] Medrano also acted positively toward a fan who shared the idea of a sitcom set in an alternative universe where "Blitzo and Stolas are two single dads getting married" and explained that the season of Helluva Boss is being started in the fall, but the eight episodes of the first season won't drop at once, but over time.[29][30] Stolas is also presumably bisexual as he is married with a wife and a daughter, but also had sex with Blitzo.
Other media[edit]
"Oh Millie" music video[edit]
On February 14, 2020, an animated Helluva Boss music video called "Oh Millie" was uploaded on YouTube,[31] centering around Moxxie and Millie's loving marriage and their I.M.P. assassination work. The video features a song written by Parry Gripp, with vocals by Horvitz and Lindbeck.
Voice dubs[edit]
On September 16, 2020, the French dub of the pilot was released on Medrano's YouTube channel.[32]
Reception[edit]
In December 2019, in an article about the current state of adult animation, CBR animation critic Reuben Baron, stated that while the pilot episodes of Hazbin Hotel and Helluva Boss have garnered "some warranted criticism" because of their immature and edgy humor, they are still "clear labors of love from an animation standpoint."[33] This contrasted with Tito W. James's assessment on Comicon.com that demons having access to a portal that goes to the human realm "adds a new dynamic and is ripe for narrative potential."[34] Similarly, a reviewer for the Spanish site Cafetoons praised the characters for being introduced in a "very appropriate way" while maintaining the black comedy, and catchy songs. Some even claim that the Helluva Boss pilot was better than the Hazbin Hotel pilot.[35] Other animators praised the show's first episode.[lower-alpha 11] Others stated that there are "multiple musical numbers in each episode" like Animaniacs and Family Guy, and although the second episode is more serious than previous episodes, there are "plenty of laughs and raunchy jokes."[11]
