Helmly Mayoral Manor is an historic home[1] located in Saint Augustine, Florida, in the historic Davis Shores[2][3] neighborhood of Anastasia Island. The home was built by the 95th mayor[4] of Saint Augustine and oil magnate[5] Vernon Noel Helmly.[1][6] The home was designed in the traditional Minorcan style, characterized by Spanish arches and tile work, wood beam ceilings, whitewashed walls, and a southward facing.[7]

History[edit]

Constructed in stages, the home was initially completed in 1973 by Mayor Helmly. A second story was added in 2004 by architect Frank J. Santoriello for caretaker Alan Wilson.[8] The caretaker in 2003, Michael McQueen, held two Pulitzer Prizes and served as an Associated Press bureau chief as well as head of the journalism department at Florida International University. McQueen was preceded by Ross and Linda Forsyth, who went on to restore other old homes in the Saint Augustine historic district.[9] The current preservationist, Craig Conley, writes dictionaries for HarperCollins[10] and college textbooks for McGraw-Hill.[11]
