Hemant Kumar Suresh Punjabi (born 27 January 1994), better known by his stage name Hemant Punjabi, is a musician who is Indian born in Lagos, Nigeria in West Africa, although he is based in Benin Republic. Hemant sings in Fon, French and English.[1]

Having picked an interest in singing as a child during his school days, he started his music career in 2020 and his music style is mainly Afro-Indo, a new music genre.[2]

Early life and education

Hemant Punjabi, the first born in a family of two, was born in Lagos, Nigeria to Indian parents.

He attended Playgroup School in Nigeria for his early education after which he relocated to India, where he completed his secondary and high school studies at Panchgani, Mahabaleshwar in Maharashtra. He later joined MES Garware College of Commerce in Pune, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree (BBA). After his studies he relocated to Benin Republic, in Africa, where his father runs an Indian restaurant and other businesses.

Musical career

Hemant Punjabi made his debut in Indo-Afro, which is a fusion of Indian and Afro beats in February 2021 and by February 2022, he had become the first Indian musician to release an Afro-Indian track titled ‘Mon BB’, which features Vano Baby, a Benin artist. He has since released a number of other songs. His follow-up single ‘Wa Dû Vé’ was released the following month.[3]

He released his third single ‘Cheri Main Teri’, an Indo-Afro-Pop fused song with bilingual lyrics. The song features guest vocals from Benin’s Zeynab and production from Masta Juzz Toofan of Togo.[4]

Hemant is currently working on his debut album FITA (FROM INDIA TO AFRICA), which consists of 7 songs and features by top artists from Benin like Blaaz, Vano Baby, Tyaf, Tgang, Nasty Nesta and Crisba.[5]

The album features different kinds of music genres such as R&B, Jazz, Pop, Amapiano, Reggae and Afrobeat.[6]

Other activities

Hemant has also been active with the Zikomo Africa Charitable Trust, which has a vision to empower teenage orphans through paying school fees, providing them with medication, shelter, and food etc.[7]

He was appointed as the brand ambassador of Zikomo Africa Awards and performed in Lusaka, Zambia, alongside Awilo Longomba and Grace Lokwa from DR Congo.

Personal life

Hemant is a dog lover and a restauranteur in Cotonou, Benin Republic.[8]

He loves spending his leisure time doing Realistic Sketch Art, playing guitar, and composing music etc.[9]

Awards

Hemant has so far won two awards which include:

  • 2022: (ZAA) Zikomo Africa Awards- Best Male Artist Of The Year West Africa.[10][11]
  • 2022: (BSA) Benin Showbiz Awards- Best Collaboration Song Of The Year - (Cheri Main Teri Ft Zeynab)
