Hendrik Folkerts is a Dutch art historian, curator, and writer. He has worked at the Art Institute of Chicago[1], documenta 14 in Kassel and Athens, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 2021, he was appointed as Curator of International Contemporary Art and Head of Exhibitions at Moderna Museet in Stockholm.[2] [3]

Folkerts uses an artist-centred curatorial approach that focuses on process-based exhibition-making. The programmes that he curates relate to the field of performance art, as well as to feminist, queer, and anti-colonial histories of art.[4]

Biography

Hendrik Folkerts holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Art History from the University of Amsterdam. He currently serves as Curator of International Contemporary Art and Head of Exhibitions at Moderna Museet in Stockholm. During his time at the Moderna Museet, Folkerts curated the exhibition Seven Rooms and a Garden: Rashid Johnson and Moderna Museet's collection, which combines the format of a survey exhibition of Rashid Johnson's work with a presentation of the museum's collection.[5] In 2022, he organized solo projects and exhibitions at Moderna Museet featuring Every Ocean Hughes and Sara Sejin Chang (Sara van der Heide).[6][7]

Prior to his employment at Moderna Museet, Folkerts held the position of Dittmer Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Art Institute of Chicago between 2017 and 2022.[1] [8]

From 2010 to 2015, Folkerts worked as Curator of Performance, Film, and Discursive Programs at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. He curated the public programme of exhibitions, performances, and lectures. This programme reimagined the museum as a space not only for art but also for public debate and interaction, which took place within the museum and at the museum's partner institutions in Amsterdam. [9] He also co-curated performance and solo projects with artists such as Andrea Geyer, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Alexandra Bachzetsis, Every Ocean Hughes, Pablo Bronstein, Sharon Hayes, Matthew Lutz-Kinoy, MPA, Cally Spooner, Ulay, Michael Portnoy, Wu Tsang, VALIE EXPORT, and Evelyn T. Wang, among others.

Between 2009 and 2011, he coordinated the Curatorial Program at De Appel arts centre in Amsterdam.[10]
