Henri Arslanian (born February 25, 1983) is a Canadian author, speaker and consultant based in Hong Kong. Arslanian is an Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Hong Kong[1] and a visiting scholar at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.[2]

A lawyer and banker by background, Arslanian is recognised as one of Asia's most influential FinTech thought leaders.[3] In October 2016, he delivered a TEDx talk in Hong Kong on How FinTech is Shaping the Future of Banking.[4] He also teaches the first FinTech university course in Asia.[5]

Career[edit]

Admitted to the Bar in both New York and Quebec, Arslanian started his career at the Canadian law firm of Fasken Martineau before moving to Hong Kong with Timothy Loh LLP.

He then joined UBS Investment Bank in Hong Kong where he helped finance entrepreneurs to launch their own fund before leaving to join a fintech start-up. In November 2016, Arslanian joined PwC as the FinTech & RegTech Leader, China/HK and U.S. Liaison.

Arslanian was appointed as an Adjunct Associate Professor at Hong Kong University in 2015 where he teaches courses on FinTech and Entrepreneurship in Finance. He is also a Visiting Scholar at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology where he teaches a course on hedge funds. Arslanian previously lectured graduate courses on Chinese Law and Doing Business in China at the University of Sherbrooke in Canada from 2010 to 2013.

Books[edit]

Arslanian's book titled Entrepreneurship in Finance: Successfully Launching and Managing a Hedge Fund in Asia (Palgrave Macmillan)[6] was published in November 2016. It focuses on the legal, regulatory, fund structuring, tax, governance, capital raising, talent, office space, technology, and operational and budgeting considerations involved in launching a hedge fund, from the pre-launch phase to the expansion and institutionalization of the business.

Awards[edit]

In 2007, Arslanian was awarded The Governor General's Academic Medal.[7]

He was named a member of the Milken Institute's Young Leaders Circle[8] in January 2016, one of the 100 Most Influential Individuals in FinTech in Asia[9] in November 2016 and one of the global "20 Rising Stars under 40" by the Armenian Bar Association.[10]

Education[edit]

Born in Montreal and of Armenian descent, Arslanian attended College Jean-de-Brebeuf before graduating with a Bachelor of Law from the Université de Montréal, where he was on the Dean's List of Excellence and completing a Masters in Transnational Law from the University of Sherbrooke. He then completed a Masters in Chinese Law from Tsinghua University in Beijing as well as an Executive MBA from Columbia Business School, London Business School and Hong Kong University.

He is fluent in English, French and Armenian and conversational in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese.
