Henrik Gunnar Dohlman is a Swedish-American scientist and educator, recognized for his work with G proteins, G protein coupled receptors, and Regulator of G protein signaling (RGS) proteins.
Education
Dohlman earned his B.A. in Chemistry from Wesleyan University and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Duke University. After postdoctoral training at University of California Berkeley he became a professor of pharmacology at Yale University. He is currently Sanford Steelman Distinguished Professor and Chair of Pharmacology at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.[1]
Work
Dohlman holds multiple patents and has worked as a consultant for Wyeth-Ayerst and Cadus Pharmaceuticals. In 2013 he was appointed Associate Editor, and in 2022 named Deputy Editor, of the Journal of Biological Chemistry.[2]
Research
Dohlman has made contributions to the fields of molecular pharmacology and biochemistry. As a graduate student with Nobel laureate Robert Lefkowitz he contributed to the first sequencing of a G protein coupled receptor (GPCR).[3] Other major findings include endomembrane signaling by G proteins [4][5][6] and their regulation by GTPase-activating proteins known as RGS proteins.[7][8][9] His lab pioneered the use of mass spectrometry to identify sites of protein ubiquitination.[10]
Awards and recognition
Dohlman was named Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science,[11] Fellow of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology [12] and as Established Investigator of the American Heart Association.
