Henry Baker Jr

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Henry Baker Jr was a British missionary with the Church Missionary Society in what is today Kerala state (then part of Travancore state) in India. He was born in 1816 and died in 1878. He started a church mission among the hill tribe called Malayaraya. He believed that the caste system was connected to Hinduism and was an obstacle to the liberation of tribes and dalits. Baker came from a farming family. This background deepened his understanding of the under-privileged and also a dislike of upper caste privilege. Baker's goal was the eradication of caste prejudice in the Malayaraya mission and surrounding society. He stressed the dignity and equality of all human beings. He tried to create his vision of an ideal casteless community in the town of Mundakayam, in Kerala. Today, Baker's name is remembered in schools and even a junction ("Baker Junction") in Kottayam town in Kerala.
