Henry Cloete (1790–1870) was a judge and author.
Report in South Africa
In 1843, Cloete was dispatched by Sir George Napier to the Natal Colony to compile a report on land claims made by the Dutch farmers in the colony and inform the farmers that Britain had no intention of extending its authority beyond the Drakensberg mountain range.[1]
On 5 October 1843, Cloete signed a treaty of "peace and friendship" with King Mpande of the Zulu Kingdom.[1]
Cloete concluded his report in 1844.[1]
Writing
In 1899, Cloete published The History of the Great Boer Trek and the Origins of the South African Republics.[2]
