Henry Dwight Porter (1845 – 1916) was an American medical missionary who worked in the China of the 19th century.[1] He adopted the Chinese name 博亨利/博恆理 (Bo Heng-li).[2]

Biography

He was born on August 19, 1845 in Green Bay, Wisconsin, United States.[citation needed]

He was the son of Review Jeremiah and Eliza Chappell Porter.[citation needed]

He got married to Elizabeth Cotton Chapin on 2 April 1879 and had three sons with her.[3]

He died on 23 October 1916 in La Mesa, San Diego County, California.[4]

Education

He completed his Bachelor of Arts degree at Beloit College of Wisconsin in 1867.[citation needed]

He completed his Doctor of Medicine degree at Northwestern University Medical College in 1872.[citation needed]

Career

He was ordained as a priest in the Congregational ministry of Beloit, Wisconsin in 1872.[5]

Missionary Work

Today he is mostly remembered for his missionary work in 19th century China.[citation needed]

He served as a medical missionary to China under the auspices of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions from 1872 - 1906 at Tianjin (Tientsin).[6]

He founded the Williams Hospital in China in 1882-1885.[citation needed]
