Her Secret is a 1933 American comedy drama film directed by Warren Millais and starring Sari Maritza, William Collier Jr. and Alan Mowbray.[1] It was released in the United Kingdom under the alternative title of The Girl from Georgia,[5] and was based on a play by Maude Fulton.[2]

Plot

Johnny Norton was a reckless hard-partying young man from a well known wealthy family from Chicago was expelled by his father Nils Norton after he was jailed for drunk driving. He takes a job at a Tucson gas station just across the street from a breakfast joint run by a pretty waitress from Georgia named Waffles. Johnny fell in love with Waffles and defended her for being falsely accused of selling liquour to minors. Complication comes when Norton's father arrives in Tucson and was captivated by the beauty of Waffles.[6][7][8]

Production

Produced in 1933 but apparently not released until 1936 (as The Girl from Georgia), this fascinating low-budget drama was independently financed by people connected to the University of Arizona, where it was partially shot. Screenwriter Helen Mitchell, whose script adapted a play by Maude Fulton, was herself an alumnus of the college. Her Secret marked the starring swan song of silent-era juvenile Buster Collier, who took supporting roles in two subsequent films before quitting the acting game. Critics have taken delight in the performance of British-Austrian actress Sari Maritza, whose struggle to replicate a Georgia accent provides considerable entertainment of the unintended kind.[9] The film was distributed by Ideal Pictures Corporation.[10]
