Background[edit]

Stevens performed a set at the Day N Vegas music festival on November 3, 2019, and then ended his set with a freestyle and promised an album by 2020. Despite this, he would fail to meet the year he set the album to release. Stevens would then release the single "Dangerookipawaa Freestyle" on Top Dawg Entertainment founder and CEO Anthony Tiffith's birthday and to start off TDE's Fan Appreciation Week. Stevens then released the album's lead single "Hollandaise" on April 22, 2022. Despite Steven's saying it wasn't intended for the final cut, it made the album with a beat switch and a third verse. The second single "Moonshooter" was released in September 16, 2022. "Moonshooter" then got a featured verse from American rapper Joey Bada$$ on the album. "Do Better" was released on October 21, 2022, as the third single with featured vocals from American singer Zacari, and the final single "Gang'Nem" was released on November 18, 2022 with American rapper Fre$h. The same day, Stevens revealed the album's title to be Herbert and the release date to be December 16, 2022 on Twitter. In December 5, 2022, Stevens played two songs from the album on Joe Budden's podcast. 2 days later, Stevens then revealed the album's tracklist and cover art.
