Herbert Brunnegger (1923 in Austria – 2002[1]) was an Austrian soldier in World War II. He volunteered at the age of 15 in 1938 and was later a member of the notorious 3rd SS Division Totenkopf.[2][3] He is notable for his presence at the Le Paradis Massacre and having taken a photograph of British soldiers before their execution.[3] He later published an account his time in the SS.[4]

Le Paradis Massacre[edit]

Brunnegger joined the Waffen SS in 1938, claiming to be the youngest pre-war professional soldier in the German Army. After a period in Poland, he was posted to Northern France.[3]

On 27 May 1940 ninety-seven British troops were captured in Le Paradis, lined up against a wall and executed with machine guns by SS soldiers. Brunnegger took a photograph of the troops before they were killed but claims he was sent away before the shooting occurred.[5][6][7] He later alleged that the SS Troops were angry at the British as they suspected they had been using dum-dum bullets although this was disputed by British survivors.[3]

By 1943, Brunnegger had been deployed to the Eastern Front, taking part in the Battle of Kursk.[2][8][9][10]
