Herring Shoes Ltd
Herring Shoes Ltd is a shoe retail company based in the UK that specialises in men's footwear. It was established in Cheltenham in 1966[1] by Richard Herring and is now owned by his son Adrian Herring.
History[edit]
In 1966 the first Herring Shoes shop was opened by the current owner's father Richard Herring in Montpellier, Cheltenham. Alongside retail of famous brands such as Cheaney, Church, Loake and Barker, a few own brand Herring styles were created in the same factories in Northamptonshire. By 2000 there were 5 shops across the Cotswolds but, as the internet side of the business grew, it was relocated to Devon.
Location[edit]
The retail premises are located at 54 Fore Street in Kingsbridge, Devon. The warehouse that services the internet business is also based in the town on the site of the old train station yard.
Products[edit]
The Herring product range is largely Goodyear welted shoes that are made in Northamptonshire by Cheaney, Alfred Sargent and Barker to unique designs that are exclusive to Herring. There are other suppliers for their welted shoes from outside the UK such as Carlos Santos in Portugal.
Other products such as bags, scarves and ties are made with tweed manufactured by Fox brothers mill in Somerset that dates back to the 1770s.
Brand[edit]
The Herring own brand product has become the largest seller on their website and is now mentioned alongside the traditional Nothamptonshire based manufacturers in various men's shoes reviews[2][3]. The business has also bought the Wildsmith business and created a new range for launch in late 2017[4] or early 2018.
Famous Wearers[edit]
Famous wearers of the Herring brand of shoes include Sir Geoff Hurst MBE[5], Will Carling OBE[6], Theo Paphitis, Simon Weston CBE[7], Alex Gregory MBE[8], Gareth Malone OBE[9], Curtis Stigers[10] and many others.
