Heterocognition
Heterocognition is a proposed concept that describes the cognitive processes that emerge from the interaction between human thought and artificial intelligence.
The term has been discussed in the context of cognitive science, philosophy of mind and experimental digital art.[1]
Definition
Heterocognition refers to a mode of cognition that arises when distinct systems of thought, such as the human mind and generative artificial intelligence, interact to produce results that neither could achieve independently.[2] It is often contrasted with traditional models of cognition, which assume a single, unified cognitive agent.
Origin and use
Even if the actual term "heterocognition" is not yet explicitly mentioned, its epistemological assumptions starts to emerging in the early 2020s in discussions about hybrid creativity and posthuman philosophy.[3]
Heterocognitive entity
A heterocognitive entity is defined as an entity whose cognitive-creative output is generated by the interaction between human and artificial cognition. Examples include experimental art projects in which human authors and generative AI systems co-create music, images or texts.
Reception and criticism
Scholars and commentators have debated the relevance of heterocognition. Some argue that it provides a useful framework for understanding new forms of authorship in the digital age,[4] while others criticise it as speculative and lacking empirical foundation.[5] Further critiques highlight that comparisons between human and artificial cognition risk overstating the autonomy of AI systems and underestimating the unique features of human thought.[6]
