Heterometopus palaeformis is a species of ciliates in the family Metopidae. Cultured from slightly saline soil in the Dominican Republic. Globally distributed cells are genetically indistinguishable but are morphologically distinct in size; moreover, organelle sizes vary between sample sites. Very similar to H. mesiterfieldi, in respect to the location and shape of the adoral zone of polykinetids, whereas both are located on the ventral side.
