Hidden Canyons is an award-winning American micro-series created by Brant Rotnem, known as the first fully-produced series on Tiktok on Instagram.[1] The series follows the interwoven lives of LGBTQ+ residents in the fictitious beachside town of Hidden Canyons, California.
Summary[edit]
Hidden Canyons is a soap opera dramedy series consisting of one-minute episodes centered around LGBTQ+ issues and themes, each of which ends in a cliffhanger.[2]
The series has been praised for its one-minute episode format[3][4], lens on LGBTQ+ issues,[5] and use of social media[1]. Themes include mental health, polyamorous marriage, LGBTQ+ parenting, race issues, and trans athletes in high school sports.[5][4][6] The show features a primarily-LGBTQ+ cast and crew.[4]
Creator Brant Rotnem has noted that the series was inspired by insufficient LGBTQ+ representation on-screen and behind the camera in Hollywood, and rising social media engagement.[4] The series was originally released on Instagram in June, 2020,[7][8] and on Tiktok in December, 2020.[4] The second season debuted on Tiktok and Instagram in Spring, 2022.[5][3][4]
Reception[edit]
Hidden Canyons has won multiple awards including the Outfest Episodic Audience Award,[9] and has garnered 7 million views on Tiktok and Instagram.
The series has been lauded by critics for its addicting storylines and fresh look at LGBTQ+ issues. Digital Spy's David Opie writes, "[Hidden Canyons] includes more depth in sixty seconds than plenty of shows do in sixty whole minutes... queer experiences ranging from surrogacy and polyamory to mental health and trans rights are threaded together in one seamless -- and extremely addictive -- series. [It] could turn out to be the best, most original LGBTQ+ series you'll watch all year."[4]
Film Daily's Frankie Stein writes, "A new show is combining underrepresented stories with a structure like you've never seen before... The series is changing how people think about media & storytelling in the digital age, and it's pioneering a whole new way of creating hit shows."[3]
