Hidden Heroes is a publishing initiative created to put the spotlight on the people who built the foundations of modern technology. It is written by an American popular science author and TV/podcast host Steven Johnson (author) and published by Netguru.

Hidden Heroes was launched in April 2022[1] with a live event in Meat Packing District, New York, during which Radia Perlman, one of the first innovators featured by the publication, was interviewed by the audience and the author himself.[2]

Features[edit]

Until the end of 2022, Hidden Heroes recognized ten innovators whose contribution helped build the foundation for tech solutions used in image processing, GPS, social media , touch screen or LAN network. The list includes:

  1. Pattie Maes
  2. Radia Perlman
  3. Lou Montulli
  4. Douglas Engelbart
  5. Philip Zimmermann
  6. Gladys West
  7. Nasir Ahmed
  8. Sam Hurst
  9. Jeff Han
  10. Ken Kocienda

Interesting facts[edit]

During the launch event, Radia Perlman recited by heart her ode to spanning tree, "Algorhyme."[3]

As part of the project, Radia Perlman, Lou Montulli, Philip Zimmermann and Ken Kocienda hosted separate Ask Me Anything sessions on Reddit joined by over four million users.

All features, read by the author himself, are available on major podcasting platforms like Spotify or Apple Podcasts.
