The Highway 401/410/403 Interchange is a large freeway interchange currently under construction in Mississauga, Ontario, just west of Toronto. It is one of the largest freeway interchanges to be built in Canada. Having been in development since 1974, it is one of the longest interchange construction projects in history and is slated to be completed in 2018, making it a 44-year construction project. This is mainly due to lack of funding and/or failed alignment reviews.

History[edit]

The Highway 401-403-410 interchange looking east in 1987. Before 1990, Highway 410 did not connect with Highway 403, and existed as a Super two north of Highway 401
The completed interchange in 2013, looking north (Highway 401 was being widened west of the interchange)

The first phase of the construction of this interchange began in 1974,[1][self-published source] by constructing the overpass to allow the right of way for the new highway to run below.[2][self-published source] Highway 410 was completed between here and Bovaird Drive in 1978 as an undivided highway,[3][self-published source] and access to and from the highway can only be accessed to Highway 401 east and from Highway 401 west. It has since been converted to a six-lane highway by the early 1990s along with full entry and exit to and from Highway 401. By 1980, Highway 403 was opened between Cawthra Road and here and at that time the express lanes weren't constructed until the mid-1990s. The flyover ramps to and from Highway 410 was constructed between 1988 and 1990 and were among the largest ramps in this interchange complex.[4][self-published source] The right of way part of the interchange that would provide direct freeway access between Highway 410 and Highway 403 was constructed in the early-mid 1990's. By 2013, the express-collector system on the Highway 401 was extended from here to Hurontario Street. As of 2016, construction is underway to add the ramps linking eastbound Highway 401 to westbound Highway 403 and eastbound Highway 403 to westbound Highway 401[5] and will be completed in 2018. Because of this, various bridge rehabilitation are already underway for this interchange.
