Hilary Doyle

Hilary Louis Doyle (born 1943) is an Irish historian who has co-authored 176 books and works across 299 publications, in two languages[1] on historic military topics since 1964, predominantly German armoured fighting vehicles, notably the Encyclopedia of German Tanks.[2] Doyle frequently collaborated with Thomas L. Jentz [de].

Since 2005, Doyle has supported the Weald Foundation, which preserves historic armoured military vehicles from World Wars I and II, since 2005. Currently, Doyle is a trustee and director of the foundation.[3] Doyle lives in Dublin with his wife and three children.[4]

Career[edit]

His first article was published in 1964. With Chris Ellis and Peter Chamberlain[lower-alpha 1] he founded Bellona Publications to publish books on tanks.[5]

He collaborated with Walter Spielberger, a German veteran, writing books together for Motorbuch Verlag[5]

With Thomas Jentz and Peter Chamberlain, he wrote the “Encyclopaedia of German Tanks” (published in 1978)[5] Doyle and Jentz set up , “Panzer Tracts” to publish their research on German tanks.[5]


Weald Foundation[edit]

The Weald Foundation is a charitable trust, founded in 2003 for restoring and maintaining armoured military vehicles and related equipment, mainly from the First and Second World War, and to educate the public about their history. The Foundation oversees its own collection of tanks, armoured and soft-skinned military vehicles, in working condition.[3]
